Reporting someone for concern

Might sound like a stupid question but can someone give me an idea what happens if I was to report that I think someone might be a danger to others or to themselves?
I genuinely care for this person but I also don’t want to make things worse or attract their wrath because they’d probably know that it was me.
Thank you so much.

Unfortunately the threshold for sectioning is eyewateringly high now due to Tory cuts so it’s not something you can do unless you’re that person’s immediate family and even then I think you may need the backing of police or a GP. Been there. I was panicking about my nephew who was very much a danger to everyone including himself but all the police could suggest was a welfare check (they make sure he’s alive & uninjured then leave) and GP suggested I get him to agree to take himself to A&E! Which of course he’s never going to agree to as he believed he was fine and would’ve attacked me at the mere suggestion that he wasn’t fine! 🤦🏼‍♀️

Bear in mind, the point at which I called Police I had reason to believe he had a weapon and was going to use it. Police uninterested………Unless he used said weapon, in which case they’d very much be interested, they said. 😑

Thank you so much. I don’t even have sectioning in mind. I think the person would know that it was me who reported them once they got a welfare check then.

Are the concerns that they might try to end their life? Or take the life of minors/ children?

It is a very tough call here because so many people are hiding a desperate sense of hopelessness and many feel like they'd be ok if they died tomorrow. This is not as abnormal as society tells us it is. For many it is fleeting luckily. For many, life is very difficult with difficult circumstances so this feeling is a natural reaction. We are told it is abnormal. No, it is not. But it's important to gauge the level of risk.

I worry how damaging forced section is. I've been in hospital ( physical illness) with patients having mental health challenges alongside me, and when they are being observed because of threats e.g ' I'm going to jump out the window ' I have never seen them truly genuinely cared for.

So be careful because our systems can actually make people feel worse and make their mental health worse!

Is this person speaking as if they are completely deluded? E g I think I am the second coming and am talking to my microwave who told me I must kill my neighbors.....'

Is it that level of concerning?

Or is it, 'I want to die, I wish I was dead? ' level?

It would very much depend on the nature of the concern you have op. Can you give a bit more context we can work off?
