I find Modern Family both amusing and nice. Yes, there are a lot of stereotypes in it (the prissey gay male, the flamboyant gay male, the loud woman from South America ect ect) but I find that the story's are mostly kind about sterotypes.

I'm 75, and I also like The Simpsons (the political digs are so good) South Park, Strictly Come Dancing and Kingdoms on Bbc1.

in short, being old is not a defining charcteri stic.

I really cannot get on board with the view that we are one thing or another. And only that one thing.

So, I'm old, yes. I m also left wing, a mother a sister a friend and many many other things. I am not just old. Categorizing me as old, as my defining charscteristic, is to reduce me. Please don't do that to your relative.

Damn right!

GooseOnMyGrave · 07/12/2025 19:44

The Good Place. I’m rewatching it - it’s like a cosy jumper.

Greetingscard · 07/12/2025 19:54

The Good Witch - very American but very pleasant

menopausalmare · 07/12/2025 19:55

wordywitch · 04/12/2025 18:51

Have they seen Detectorists? Such a lovely, funny and gentle show.

I was just thinking the same.

menopausalmare · 07/12/2025 19:57

Mum loves the Our Yorkshire Farm and the Michael Portillo travel programme.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 07/12/2025 20:00

TheJaneyB · 07/12/2025 20:06

Gosh no, I hope I never define someone purely by their age. I used to work in advertising and it drove me nuts that when younger you were defind by whether you liked beauty, fishing, cars etc. but after a certain age you were defined by your age rather than your interests, and you’d be shown as a creepily white haired, grinning stereotype, in pastel clothes, on a beach somewhere.

In this instance it was just a shorthand description. It seemed easier than saying he’s super anxious after heart attack and wife being put in a home, and it’s not to diminish him - after illness I found even kids programs astonishingly stressful. But you are right, it’s a lazy, and somewhat condescending descriptor.

i think one of the good things about you tube etc is the channels run by more mature people, they are all helping redefine perception. I’m 61 and already noticing people want to put me in a box of how I think, behave and look.
thanks for making the point, well said indeed.

Schitts Creek is my go to gentle programme. The first one is a bit rubbish, you have to commit to two episodes. It’s very witty and there’s no protagonist.

I just wanted to say that I think you sound lovely.

scotchpotch · 08/12/2025 07:43

Trolled is great, but probably on the risqué side for your purposes! Ghosts is good too.

I don't think I've ever read a more gracious post on this site.

Thakyou

sundayvibeswig22 · 08/12/2025 09:47

Feel good series for me are things like Virgin River, Sweet Magnolias, Anne with an E, or Ripple (all on Amazon)

sickyicky · 08/12/2025 09:48

Yes to the detectorists it’s very funny show just such a lovely easy watch

rainbowsparkle28 · 08/12/2025 09:50

Gavin and Stacey and Friends are always my go to comfort watches

columnatedruinsdomino · 08/12/2025 10:00

My mum loves Doc Martin especially once we’d pointed out the hilarious patients’ names!
Other favourites are Last Tango, Amandaland, Poirot

TeaAndStrumpets · 08/12/2025 10:31

DH and I are old and although we enjoy all the usual crime/detective series we definitely sometimes need a change of pace. Agree about Ghosts (UK and USA versions - the US one really found its feet after a while) Detectorists and All Creatures Great and Small. Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries are fun.

Recently we watched The Great House Revival (iplayer). The late Hugh Wallace, as presenter, was very entertaining and informative. It's about restoring neglected rural Irish properties, so a broad range of areas and people. He did a few other property series but not available on UK tv I think.

AphroditesSeashell · 08/12/2025 10:33

The Good Place, on Netflix is my go-to series for stress-free, relaxed entertainment.

Jijithecat · 08/12/2025 10:58

Death Valley on the iPlayer. It's a cosy comedy murder mystery with Timothy Spall and Gwyneth Keyworth. It's very good and has a great cast.
