Festive party outfits - where are all the parties happening that require these clothes?!

I am slightly obsessed with clothes and love a chance to dress up. My Instagram feed is full of ads and influencers styling ‘party looks’ with satin, velvet, sequins, clutch bags, glittery sandals, faux fur jackets etc etc. I’m totally 🤩 at it all and having to rein myself in from buying….because, realistically, where would I get to wear it?!

I’m a sociable person and do have some festive invites, but honestly I’d look overdressed in most of the things I’d secretly love to wear! Do I just have dull parties to go to or is this reality and the ads are a bit of a con?! I guess I could just put on my sequins, heels and tuxedo trousers regardless! 😂

I don't know

At this point every year, the shops fill up with leopard print and stuff that looks like it was knitted with tinsel and feels like a Scrub Daddy

I avoid buying any of it and don't go to any parties

No help, OP. Sorry

Stuff it! Wear it to the Co-op to get milk!

DoingAway · 04/12/2025 09:12

Yes just put them on regardless! I quite often buy sparkly things and then wonder where I’m going to wear them.

I’ve been to Christmas work things in the past that have been quite formal but current work place is a smaller team and social stuff tends to be more low key, which I much prefer in reality.

When I was younger my boyfriend had wealthy parents and we went to posh things where you had to dress up, so I know some people must go to posh parties.

My work has a posh party once a year. Other wise all my events are nice top jeans etc.

My dd has some nice things but young ones can get away with it more.

Both the Universities DH and I worked at used to have at least one black tie do a year. That doesn’t happen anymore stopped after covid . People dress up on cruises for the formal dinners in black tie. Some charities have black tie events still but much rarer these days.i quite miss the days of dressing up.

I sing in a choir.

i wear Christmas bling for all of our Christmas concerts. The dress code is Christmas bling and I bloody love it!

During the festive period, I wear some of this stuff to the pub!

I don't buy loads, the dress I'm wearing to a party next weekend is at least 15 years old, but I do take any excuse to dress up at this time of year, and don't think you can actually be overdressed during December 🤣

wafflesmgee · 04/12/2025 09:32

Life’s too short to not wear what gives you joy
I have a golden glittery skirt I wear around the house and to the supermarket at this time of year. I feel like a goddess in it. Probably look slightly unhinged when matched with my enormous coat!

IBorAlevels · 04/12/2025 09:33

I got a sequinned dress for a posh NYE do a few years ago. I spent the whole time with my arms getting caught on things because of the sequins. Never again, despite the fun of feeling like a discoball.

No one I know goes to parties that require sequins/cocktail dresses every year. I guess if you are in your 20s or work for a big firm that has a Christmas party, but even so I suspect you'd look over dressed.

SeaAndStars · 04/12/2025 09:37

Judging by the amount of fake fur, velvet, feather and sequins in the charity shops at the moment lots of people are buying this stuff and wearing it once then giving it to charity. A fair amount of it still has original labels on so has probably never been worn.

Christmas is responsible for sooooo much landfill.

TheatricalLife · 04/12/2025 10:10

When I was in my late teens and early 20s, I had at least one party every weekend through late November and December and had stacks of party outfits -I had work dinners as well, so lots of places to wear cocktail. Now I can't even remember the last time I had a proper dressed up night out with heels and a dress.

I do, too. Even for casual Christmas gatherings with extended family, people would make an effort. No jeans, athletic wear, trainers. Even children and babies were dressed up.

In my 20s I loved little velvet dresses with sheer black tights, and vintage jewelry, and of course the big permed hair. Miss that era.

If I ran a pub,
I’d declare a bling dress code in the weeks before Xmas. I reckon it would bring loads of people out of the woodwork …

That’s a great idea.

😂 love this idea! Though not everyone likes dressing up, and I do get that. It would just be nice to dress up without feeling silly….Mind you, I did see an Instagram post the other day by an 80 year old woman saying she always dresses up even if she’s going to the supermarket because she likes to feel fabulous! I think perhaps I should just channel that attitude 😂

@CheeseIsMyIdol I and a lovely bottle green velvet dress, DS recently saw a pic of me in the 80’s going out in a black velvet and sequin dress and was a bit taken aback at just how dressed up people would get for quite a normal night out.
