Has anyone got fitter / lost weight with reformer Pilates?

I have this a go yesterday and enjoyed it but wondering if it will help me? I’m guessing it will help me get stronger which is good but will it help with weight loss? It’s so expensive so I want to have a think before I commit as will have to cut back elsewhere.

I do regular mat Pilates, it's fantastic for core strength and toning/sculpting but doesn't aid weight loss. I imagine Reformer is much the same.

Livingthedream1978 · 03/12/2025 17:36

Reformer Pilates is great for strength training and especially your core but the only thing that will help with weight loss is being in a calorie deficit. I love it as an addition to my gym workouts though.

I agree. I run for weight management and weight train for strength but pilates just gives you that bit extra 👌

I love Reformer Pilates - I go 2-3 times a week.
But no, you won’t lose loads of weight. You may lose a few inches around your waist and you will get stronger.

Happywalnut · 03/12/2025 19:36

Thanks all. I need to decide if it’s worth the price or whether a gym membership would be better (and cheaper!)

Do you think one class a week would be enough? I would struggle to afford that although I would love to do more. Really enjoyed the class I went to

I’ve got an at home fold up reformer Pilates board. Mines the Reformly one which was £100 but you can get them on Amazon for about £70. I really rate it! Do it 3 times a week and have done now for the last month. I ache like hell the next day and sweat so it must be doing something!

Sundaymorningsonthesidelines · 03/12/2025 19:45

I love reformer, and did 2x classes a week pre kids (more than a decade ago now). It will make you strong as an ox but is unlikely to cause weight loss. So it depends how overweight you are. If you’re just a bit wobbly you might find that it does have a good impact through being more toned. If you have a long way to go then it’s probably not going to give you the desired results

TheChosenTwo · 03/12/2025 19:46

I started off doing one class a week but I changed recently to doing two.
It is expensive in addition to an outdoor swimming membership an expensive gym membership but my gym don’t offer reformer and if they did the class sizes would be too big I think - the place I go only has space for 6 and we get really good tuition.
Not sure about the weight loss side of things but it’s really helping me gain muscle definition and strengthening my weak ankles I think, aswell as benefitting my general flexibility and strength. I absolutely love it and recommend it to everyone I see 😂😂

One class a week with no other exercise? In my opinion no, it won't make any difference if you're trying to get fit or lose weight sorry. Does the club/studio offer a monthly membership where you could do two classes a week?

EconomyClassRockstar · 03/12/2025 19:54

I LOVE reformer pilates and if you enjoy it, even once a week, then do it. It won't make huge amount of difference but it will still be an hour a week you look forward to.

itbemay1 · 03/12/2025 20:13

Yes! I loved it so much I bought my own reformer. I’m stronger than I’ve been.

Happywalnut · 03/12/2025 20:15

I walk an hour a day too and am trying out couch to 5k (but not enjoying running that much). Need to shift about 2 stone. 2 and a half would be even better.

If you joined a virgin active the classes are free including a reformer classes you can do as master classes as you like plus a gym membership which includes a swim pool too

That would be perfect but none around my area! Thanks though

Once a week wouldn’t do much. Although if you enjoy it, do it for that reason rather than weight loss.

If a gym membership is cheaper and means that you can go more often then it seems sensible to do that. Can you do a trial to see what you think?

Weight loss is about diet.

MiddleAgedDread · 04/12/2025 08:12

You need to eat less to loose weight, exercise for strength and fitness.

GlassofRosePorfavor · 19/12/2025 09:29

I think reformer is the best thing since sliced bread! I go 4 times a week (have currently got a kidney on vinted to help pay for it)

I have found that I have lost weight because I eat less as a result of wanting to improve iukwim? I am a certified bore now and nothing makes me happier.

i used to love spin as well but as I've aged i just can't take the environment any more. If you get your form right and give it your all I think it's just about perfect 😍

Reformer is amazing for getting rid of stiffness and pain especially in your back. It makes you very strong, I’ve also started lifting and have no issues with it due to Pilates strength. You don’t lose weight but you do tone up massively, I’m in the best shape I have ever been in

Hi, can I ask how you space out 4 workouts in a week?
I currently do 2 - 3 classes a week and find if I do 3 classes that I don’t feel as rested in between, sometimes my calves or core muscles inparticular are still sore from the previous class.

Maybe I just need to build up better fitness.

I’d honestly do Reformer everyday if my bidy would allow it.

blankcanvas3 · 19/12/2025 12:21

I love it, I go 5 days a week but it’s strength training rather than cardio so won’t be super helpful for losing weight if you only go once a week. I imagine if you were in a calorie deficit plus doing reformers 3 times a week you would still slim down

brightnails · 19/12/2025 12:41

I got much fitter and looked slimmer doing reformer Pilates x2pw for 12 years including pregnancy twice I could show off all the advanced excercises and automatically inhale to prepare move on the exhale of anything I do and it did disguise my diastasis recti belly but nothing can close it except surgery sick of seeing BS about mommy Pilates on social media it also complements running but the fact that my original instructor isn’t available and that I’m saving my money for surgery means I’m not doing it currently. I do miss it

Happywalnut · 19/12/2025 21:19

Thanks everyone. I haven’t joined a class as a bit worried about the cost. The most I could do is one a week but even that will be pushing it financially and I’m not sure one a week will do enough. I will keep up the running and I may look for a YouTube video for weights workouts that I can do at home.

I go Mondays at 6pm, Wednesdays at 6.30am, Thursdays 6pm, and Saturday or Sunday whenever I can fit it in. Yes sometimes I ache but I still go unless physically cannot get up off the sofa which has happened before with overdoing it! Now I am more in tune (oh get me 😂) so I know when I can do more or need a rest. It did take a while though 😊

GlassofRosePorfavor · 19/12/2025 23:00

Also I don't go out drinking anymore (as much) or spend randomly on clothes which is how afford it but I am willing literally to do whatever it takes to go. It's cheaper if you do monthly memberships than pay per class as well
