I'm looking for some advice on the best skincare products to buy for my Dd. She is 12 but has started her periods so does get spots and breakouts during the month.
We want to get her some lovely skin care without it being to harsh.
Can anyone recommend any products and should we do the whole cleanse, spf, serum and moisturizer or should it be more basic for her

Do 12 year olds need serum and moisturiser?

Do 12 year olds need serum and moisturiser?

That's what I'm wondering, I don't want her to have a huge skin care routine if she doesn't need it, but I also want her to take good care of her skin especially as she has started wearing makeup, so i need advice!

I didn't even know what skincare was when I was 12!

It's just the latest TikTok fad.

I think moisturiser and serums could overwhelm young skin and cause more issues than they solve? Would have thought a gentle cleanser sufficient.

My dd is 12 and she uses sulphur soap, it is very easy, cheap, and effective!

AnchorWHAT · 03/12/2025 13:25

If she is using make up then i would go with a cleanser, toner and moisturiser with spf (never too early to protect skin imo) I would take a look at the simple range or a similar product with as few nasties as possible.

ChimneyPot · 03/12/2025 13:27

My eldest is very into skincare and makeup and recommended Cerave face wash and moisturiser for younger teens.

ThatLostSock · 03/12/2025 13:30

My young teens use the Simple range of face wash and skincare. They do a nice moisturising face wash. I'd suggest starting there.

Snorlaxo · 03/12/2025 13:31

I bought my kids (sons and daughter) mid price brands like Cerave and La Roche Posay. My dd had dry skin (eczema) so used moisturiser and cleanser. My sons had oily skin so just cleanser.

If your dd wears makeup or sprays hair product near her face they a good cleanser is a good idea.

Are you looking for something sensible or trendy that she might have seen online?

aperolspritzbasicbitch · 03/12/2025 13:32

Cerave do a nice oil to foam cleanser which is suitable for baby skin, so that’s very gentle.
and then maybe just a light, water cream/moisturiser?

Keroppi · 03/12/2025 13:32

Lush Ultrabland to remove makeup and cleanse. Also feels luxe with a hot facecloth for removal and nice ingredients

Witch Hazel for spots and those little spot plaster things
Organic/proper rose water for toner/spritzing

Enough for a 12 yo and can be made to feel really luxe ie glass bottle rose water, little glass pipette organic brand of diluted witch hazel.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 03/12/2025 14:17

Nip and Fab teen range

CambridgeSingers · 03/12/2025 15:19

Another vote for cerave for face wash and moisturiser/spf.

Morecoffeethanks · 03/12/2025 15:52

I really like La Roche Posay, Avene and Cereve, the products for my much older dry skin come up very well on the Yuka app for low toxicity if that is something that concerns you.
I find simple very cheap and chemically and really think the pharmacy type brands are worth it.

blankcanvas3 · 03/12/2025 15:58

Just a very mild cleanser and moisturiser would work. Simple/Cerave, that kind of thing. If you or she are wanting a serum then grab one of the Simple booster serums, the hylaruronic acid one specifically as it’s also extremely gentle.

Thanks everyone 🙂 I think I'll take a look the CeraVe and the simple ranges, I want to keep it as light as possible for her but make sure it's actually helping her skin, unblock pores etc

Nip&Fab. I can say on which day my DS hasn’t used it because me comes out in nasty spots.
It’s amazing how much it keeps acne at bay

Cocktailsandcheese · 03/12/2025 18:23

There's a lovely skincare/personal care range called Spots & Stripes that's been developed specifically for this age group.

GreenGodiva · 03/12/2025 18:57

I think nip and fab do a green teen kit. With a spotty teen it’s better to help them develop a decent skin routine. I didn’t do it for my dd and ended up coming here to beg for recommendations when her acne suddenly went nuclear.

MBDBBB · 03/12/2025 19:04

Recommend Spots & Stripes which someone has also mentioned, Byoma gel cleanser and moisturisers are good, Cerave cleanser and spf. Simple I actually think is quite drying -it brings me out in a rash!

Doone22 · 03/12/2025 19:20

Yeh just remember that most skincare products not suitable for teens

PloddingAlong21 · 04/12/2025 20:00

Love this. I had spots as a teen and would have loved to have got into a good routine.

Cleanser and moisturiser will be good for that age, nothing too harsh.

The Ordinary is excellent and super affordable.

their cleanser is amazing - I use it morning and night myself.

Whatyoutalkingabouteh · 04/12/2025 22:03

My 12 year old has acne (unfortunately I had it) and it was hard getting her to not think about all these expensive brands aimed at youngsters and to strip it back to a very simple routine. She uses cetaphil cleanser (or cerave is good) and a simple moisturiser from the ordinary. If she has a bigger spot she puts a little Acnecide (benzoyl peroxide) which helps but only need a little bit.

Another thing that has helped is disposable biodegradable face towels which I saw recommended online by a dermatologist as more hygienic that using flannels and towels. Can use wet and dry (she cuts them in half to wash face and then pat dry) but have noticed a difference.
