Warm waterproof coat with a good hood - does it exist?!

I'm looking for a really warm, waterproof coat with a hood that is adjustable or just generally stays put! I've bought and sent back two so far, one from Regatta and one from FreeSpirit. It's mainly for doing the school run, which I've got another 4 years of, and I'm so fed up with being cold and wet waiting for DS to be let out. I don't care if I look like a tit, as long as I'm dry. All of me, head included!

Do I just need to suck it up and buy a DryRobe? Are they really the best? I can't really afford to go over £100 but at this point I'll do anything to be comfortable. The two coats I tried were reasonably priced on Amazon (£50) and seemed brilliant at first - kept me warm, went down to the top of my wellies (I'm short) and didn't let a drop of water in - but the fucking hoods drove me crazy. The Regatta one was worse because it was just too small, but the FreeSpirit one wasn't all that much better because it kept blowing down. Such a shame because both were so nice.

I was planning on going into Sports Direct and Decathlon sometime this week to see what they had in stock and try the hoods, but does anyone have any suggestions? I currently have a Peter Storm jacket which is fine but very thin, and a cheap one from Sainsbury's that's also fine but not very warm and starting to fall apart.

(I also need coat for DS and one for DD (she's a tween but not yet too cool for a coat), but they don't feel the cold as much as I do...)

This might not massively help, but I find hoods fall down unless I wear a baseball hat or a beanie underneath- I think hair is too slippery.

I usually wear a headband to keep my ears warm (sometimes a hat), and it helps keep the hood up on my other coat, but it didn't help it today's wind, annoyingly. I tried taking it off to see if that helped but it was even worse and the hood flew off straight away, so I think you're right! I don't mind wearing something underneath, but the hood needs to be a good fit as well...

This is a conundrum! I’ve never tried one, but people speak highly of the Seasalt Janelle coat, might be worth a look…

The only one that has been reliably waterproof and storm and snow proof has been my Merrell Elle wood Parka. I got it 12 years ago and it's still good now and that's living in the North West of England so plenty of rain. I had a sea salt plant hunter that did pretty well but the hood wasn't as good. I'd look at sale/discontinued lines from bigger outdoor brands rather than regatta or Petet Storm. They tend not to be as durable or use more technical fabrics which keep you warm but not sweaty

The only jacket I’ve had with a hood that stays put is a fjalraven. They’re expensive but maybe try eBay/vinted. It’s called Nuuk and it’s waterproof and wind proof. I find it warm but in very cold weather an add another layer. I’m on my 4th winter wearing it and it still looks amazing.

CoodleMoodle · 01/12/2025 22:18

Thanks both, will have a look.

My Peter Storm coat has never let me down in terms of keeping dry, and the hood always stays where I bloody put it because it's adjustable, but it's not terribly warm. I've had it for years and years and still rate it, but it's not cozy! Perfect for rain in the warmer months, not so good for the freezing cold school playground in December...

Agree with Seasalt Janelle warm, light and waterproof. Deals in the Seasalt last week I got 25% off making their coats a bit more affordable.

Thank you, I've just had a look - brand new it's completely out of my budget! I'll have a look second hand and see if anything comes up.

It's also a little bit short, I'm really looking for something that covers me completely. The changing robes were both halfway down my shins and kept me perfectly dry (except for my head!).

I have this coat and I really like it. I run on the hotter side and find it perfect with a thicker jumper and a T-shirt in winter. If you are one of those people who feel every bit of the cold it might not be quite enough, but I think there is a version that’s warmer again if you need more.

I’ve always found my knee length Lands End coat good, although the hood might not fit criteria. They often have good sale prices and I’ve seen some on Vinted. My coat is about 9 years old and still going strong.

I've got a Peter Storm Women’s Paloma Parka | Ultimate Outdoors parka with an adjustable hood, I find the hood it pretty good at staying in place in foul weather

Parcell · 02/12/2025 16:51

I have a Didrikson coat. The hood stays in place perfectly and is adjustable.

OneBusyFinch · 02/12/2025 16:52

I’ve got the superdry city Parker - it’s been brilliant. Warm, waterproof and hood stays up

Badslipperluck · 02/12/2025 16:56

Didriksons have good hoods that adjust and stay in place but are made for slightly taller women so if you can deal with that they're really good

Moremustard · 02/12/2025 17:04

Seasalt Janelle I agree, I also have a plant hunter from them. Buy in the sale or 2nd hand hood stays up and both waterproof

WeJustWantYouToBeHappy · 02/12/2025 17:07

Another vote for Didriksons, especially any of their parkas.

Sprig1 · 02/12/2025 17:12

Can you (or get someone to) fit elastic and toggles to the frtrim of the hood. Then you can tighten it up so it won't blow down.

VictoriousPunge · 02/12/2025 17:13

I just bought my third Didrikson's coat. Went for a very warm, long, waterproof one with a good enough hood for my big hair - see link. They are great, although not cheap. It's thicker and warmer than it looks in the pictures. I reckon it would do nicely in sleet and snow.
