the zipper on my coat has broken like this meaning it will zip but will open again underneath where it’s zipped.
does anyone know of it’s something I can repair myself or can it even be fixed? Thanks

If you get pliers and hold the chunky bit the zip slides through, then give a couple of gentle taps with a hammer, it closes it slightly, meaning the teeth go back to being tightly fastened, so it doesn’t undo. I fixed a handbag zip this way after seeing a video on TikTok.
If I can find the video I will come back and post it.

I’m in the same situation with two coats that I am about to throw away. Watching with interest.

How much, if any, sewing do you do? As a sewer, the cleanest way to fix that would be to unpick the current zip, measure it (or measure it before unpicking if it's your only winter coat) then buy a new zip from a haberdashery shop (probably about £5 for a long one) and then stitch the new zip in.

If you're not a sewer, what is the problem, that the bottom of the zip is breaking off from the fabric part of the zip that is then sewn into the coat?

Take it to a Zip Yard (or other repair shop) and get a new zip put in.

Here you go, try this before shelling out for a new zip.

Hmm it may not be as national a chain as i thought!! We have one in our town, and its amazing for repairs and alterations.
There are others around the country.

Exactly this. I have happily paid someone to replace zips before. Much cheaper than a new coat, and I don’t have the skill or equipment.

Any dressmaker, seamstress or tailor can put a new zip in for you for less than £20 I would think.

iSage · 30/11/2025 09:08

I would go with putting in a new zip. If you have a covered market, you can get plastic zips like that for less than £5. It won't take long to sew in a new zip, even if you do it by hand. Make sure you measure the existing zip accurately.
