Can a hairdresser do this-what do I ask for?

I’ve had highlights for a couple of years now, with a root shadow/smudge. I really like how it looks until my natural mousey colour grows in and then I have my ashy roots, the root smudge and the highlights and it looks a bit of a mess.

Last time I went I just had highlights done. That was 4 months ago and I really like my darker roots with the blonde however, the regrow line is quite harsh.

Can a hairdresser do the effect of a root smudge but using your own natural hair colour so it grows out softer?

I hope that makes sense!

This is how I achieved my now natural white hair, originally brunette and the routes were going lighter and lighter. I did the colouring myself at home, by going lighter and lighter from the roots.
It'd cost a fortune in a salon which I couldn't afford.
Anyway if you have the money I'm sure you're hairdresser could achieve it. I had my hair cut regularly and kept it short bobbed all the while.
