Hello

Has anyone been here please ,it's a big birthday for me and for us it will be an expensive holiday.

We are flying into Basel and i want to experience mountains and I don't know whether to base myself in Lucerne or Interlaken or grindewald?

Inwas thinking one night Lucerne and then Interlaken because it seems to be easy to do day tips ?

But I've heard Interlaken isn't pretty ?

Any thoughts
It's so expensive so i am trying to get it right
Also wondering whether to get a car because after this we are heading to Colmar

It is all pretty, the mountains compensate for any architectural flaws although most towns in
Switzerland are a combination of classic and modern style. What trips do you want to do and bear in mind scenic trains are costly. Grindelwald is relatively small,Interlaken a town, Lucerne a small city.

And for three days base yourself in one place. Trains are easy and reliable between them,

@LIZS thanks For replying .I'm not sure about scenic trains to be honest I'm just thinking about Grindelwald and latabruan sp valley.

Lauterbrunnen is accessible by direct train from Interlaken as is Grindelwald. However if you don’t intend to go up the mountains or hike there is not a huge amount to see there. From either Lucerne or Interlaken you can take boat trips.

Well I do want to go up in grindewald to first and the top.

Interlaken, Grindelwald and mount First can be done in one day but we loved it so much we want to go back and spend 2-3 days there.

it was absolutely stunning.

@AgnesMcDoo so you liked Interlaken as well ?

So you do plan mountain excursions! By “top” do you mean the Jungfraujoch, if so you can access via Lauterbrunnen and Wengen or Grindelwald by train. You won’t do both trips in a day.

Gridelwald and Lauterbrunnen are accessible by road or train from Interlaken, then there are trains from Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald, and the V-barn cable way from Grindelwald-Grund to the top of the Jungfraujoch at 11,362 feet above sea level where you can walk on the glacier if the weather is ok. The trains and cable-car system can take you around the area to the the other villages and you can walk on the well maintained hiking paths or hire a toboggan and enjoy long rides on the toboggan runs. You can buy a ‘walkers pass’ that covers most of the transport system and gives you a discount on the Jungfraujoch trip. You can certainly find enough to do for three days, but it is expensive.
It’s a lovely area and one of my favourite places on the planet.

Yes I did and didn’t have enough time
to explore. A town with 2 lakes and mountains all round - what’s not to like
