What's simmering away in your slow cooker on this wet Saturday morning?

It's slow cooker weather and I've had beef short ribs on the go since 07.00

Only just getting the aroma - had to check that I'd switched it on!

Mine will be on in about an hour. My own creamy, chunky chicken and vegetable soup. So thick it's more like a stew.

Tadka daal with a fucktonne of ginger and extra garlic because we've all got colds 🤧

Am I the only one who finds that slow cooker food all has a really weird taste?

I have never really had successes with my slow cooker. I would love some tips!

Not recipes, and I already know not to put in too much liquid. We have a metal one... do you think they can be less successful than ceramic ones?

I've only used ceramic ones so can't compare but I'm very happy with my Stockpot slow cooker. My last one lasted 20 years and recently bought the updated version and find it just as good.

Buy Crockpot 3.5L Digital Slow Cooker - Black | Slow cookers | Argos

It says suitable for small families, 3-4 portions, but it handles more than that - I recently made a lamb & prune tagine and easily fed five people.

At £35 it's worth you giving it a go!

Pork ramen, can’t wait!

CruCru · 29/11/2025 15:33

Not using the slow cooker right now but I got up and made the Christmas cake. It’s been in the simmering oven since 11am and I’ll probably leave it there until 6 or 7pm.

I have a metal one and I always finish mine off on the hob for 10-15 minutes, it really thickens it up, or dries it off if you want something like shredded chicken.

I also love mine for jacket potatoes. I put them in at breakfast on low and then give them 15 minutes in a hot oven to crisp them up, they get very lovely soft and fluffy in the middle and I don’t have to think about them at all till 15 mins before I want to eat.

Vegetable biryani.

Ooh, how do you do this in a slow cooker? I'd love to know

UsaidIsaid · 29/11/2025 15:42

Used mine a few days ago to make beef in stout.

DarkEyedSailor · 29/11/2025 16:07

@Hosoan very easily! Instead of putting it into a casserole and baking it, just put it in the slow cooker. Have a little poke after a while to see if it's ready.

Do you use the liners? The only time I've ever thought it tasted funny was when a friend cooked for me and she uses them.

Mum2Fergus · 29/11/2025 16:08

Chilli con carne

I've never actually used one, but I've had different meals from them (from different houses) and they all had an odd but distinct taste - not unpleasant as such, but weird!

We had chicken and veg casserole tonight ,it was delicious.

pbdr · 30/11/2025 12:09

My favourite is a half leg of lamb. I brown it in a pan first, with some roughly chopped onions and carrots and crushed cloves of garlic. Add about 1/3rd of a bottle of red wine, 3 knorr rich beef stock pots, a few sprigs of fresh thyme, and transfer to the slow cooker, adding some extra boiling water to at least partially cover the meat. On high for 6-8 hours and then take the meat out to rest, strain the stock and boil it to reduce it down in a pan until it becomes a lovely, rich gravy. I usually serve with cheesy mashed potatoes, roast carrots and peas. Yum.

SnowyThings · 30/11/2025 13:20

Veg chilli made last night (I asked a question about it on here!) and had beef in stout & horseradish sauce a few nights ago. The trick is not to add too much liquid.

GameOfJones · 30/11/2025 13:38

Nothing today but yesterday it was chicken casserole with chunky chopped carrots, potatoes and lots of pearl barley. DD1 had a stinking cold but a bowl of that and an early night seems to have done the trick and she's a lot better today.

Gazelda · 30/11/2025 14:08

Christmas pudding! Prepped it ready yesterday and left it overnight to soak up all the juices. As today is Stir Up Sunday, we all gave it a stir and had a wish. It’s now in the slow cooker for 8 hrs. Then it’ll be reheated on Christmas day for another couple of hours on low.
