Anyone know about low iron/ferritin

My ferritin is 36, is this low ? I think it seems to be. The doctors have said “normal no action”

I bruise very very easily which I why I had bloods done, my hair doesn’t grow, I get headaches and a lack of energy, I also get restless legs which is the worst thing ever, could those symptoms be caused by low ferritin?

It was 29 at one point and they did give me iron but never bothered to give me anymore or recheck.
Is below 30 classed as iron deficiency?

Your ferritin levels are at lower side but still normal but ferritin can be normal and you can still feel tired and have symptoms if your transferrin is low. Has your GP not done a test for that?
Your symptoms could also means deficiency for B12, B9 or vitamin D. Just because your ferritin is normal your GP can’t ignore your issues. If I were you I would go back and ask them to do full blood check or offer you appropriate treatment.

The NHS have a lower limit of 15 (I think) before they will prescribe. That is far from optimal. 30 should be the lower limit, but at least 70 is really where they should be and hair won't regrow until this point.

Eta: try prescription strength ferrous fumerate which you can buy otc

IvyOrangesCandles · 29/11/2025 07:53

Possibly the linked thread above but I learned from here ( then did my own research) that nice guidelines for women are 70 and apparently on radio four , 100 was said to be optimum for women.

applegingermint · 29/11/2025 07:57

36 is trending low but not actually medically low. However many people feel better when their ferritin is at least 50.

Restless legs has a NICE guideline that suggests ferritin should be at least 50.

https://cks.nice.org.uk/topics/restless-legs-syndrome/management/management/

There is no harm in taking 200mg ferrous sulphate every second day and getting re-tested in 3 months.

So I did have full bloods done, I will attach pics if that helps, all said normal.
What strength ferrous fumerate should I ask for at the pharmacy ?

I think that going from 62 to 36 will make you feel crap. Get some ferrous Fumarate over the counter.

Mine is low. On iron tablets and b12 and folic acid and vit d and blood tests every 6/8w to check level

doc said to take these and is slowly rising by 1 point a month

I’m tired and bruise easily and sleep lots - I work nights but even some days when I haven’t worked I go back to bed for a nap once dd is at school

All I know is that my hg was 92, they've tried ferrous fumate and I'm looking at a blood infusion.

B12 was strangely fine.

ThisHazelPombear · 29/11/2025 08:24

Ferrous fumarates so cheap I just take before bed anyway because I have heavy periods.

FrogsWormsandButterflies · 29/11/2025 08:54

My ferritin was 14 yesterday and I’m 38 weeks pregnant!

GOODCAT · 29/11/2025 09:10

I had a private blood test and was told my iron levels were within normal limits, but on the low side. They suggested taking feraglobin, which is available at places like superdrug, and the difference it made and the speed at which it made a difference has been amazing.

Blondeshavemorefun · 29/11/2025 09:44

Feraglobin Has never been mentioned to me unless it’s in the ones above I posted that he told me to get
