After Lucy Letby was convicted in August 2023 of murdering seven babies, a number of experts contacted Eye columnist MD because they "believe the science and statistics presented at the trial were incomplete and flawed and that the case against Letby was not proven beyond reasonable doubt". In this special report Dr Phil Hammond lays out the case of why he thinks the nurse should be allowed to appeal.

I follow Lucy Letby trials on Twitter and I’m always surprised at how quiet the BBC is about it all.

I’m not going to pretend to be an expert on anything because I’m not. I do think the recent case of Peter Sullivan highlighted how once you’re convicted of a crime in this country getting that conviction overturned is a) nigh on impossible and b) moves at snails pace; neither of which are in the interests of justice.

Anyone going to be watching the documentary on Netflix that comes out on the 4th Feb?

I’d agree with you. I think there’s an idea that to admit that actually they got it wrong would undermine the whole process and so it’s better just to double down.

It’s like they learn nothing from the past. It does remind me of the Angela Cannings case (convicted of murder after multiple SIDS cases in the family) as there seems to have been some very dodgy/ selective statistical analysis going on here too.

Seven miscarriages of justice named on this thread alone. There needs to be a re-trial.
