Piano for 5 year old

My daughter desperately wants a piano for Christmas however I know this may just be a fad, I’ve never done it myself so have no idea on this but has anybody got any recommendations on what kind of thing is best to start with? I don’t want to spend hundreds in case she gets bored but I of course want to encourage her at the same time! I don’t know where to even start when looking and what’s good or not? Ideally something with a stand etc. thank you!

My DS does too. I’m getting a keyboard with stand for him incase he doesn’t like it. Absolutely zero point getting a huge grand piano.

Yep, I got mine a keyboard to see if there would be enough interest/perseverance moving forward. It worked well, they went to a proper piano teacher with a piano and came home and practiced on the keyboard.

If you go Keyboard, just stay to one of the decent brands, and possibly buy a pedal that can be attached to it. Casio, Roland, Yamaha etc. You can always sell it on if they progress out of it.

If you did have a reason to jump to a more long-term option, then something like this is about the "cheapest"/"Smallest" you can go, while still having something that could last pretty deep into a young pianists' journey.

Its small, portable, but has a good electronic piano feel/quality, and won't really limit a Child until they get to a decently high level. But if it is only your child playing and they have never tried, obviously it is a fair chunk of money to risk on a failed hobby.

Also, just as another option.. if you have a big and conveniently accessible house. You could always consider a real upright piano... They can be basically free if you look in the right places. Plenty of people just want to get rid of theirs, and unless they are of certain brands/a good quality, they are worth basically nothing. The only hassle is transportation and cost is an initial tuning.

Has your daughter ever played a piano? And are you thinking of getting piano lessons for her? I would find a way for her to have a go before buying anything - perhaps asking around if anyone you know has a keyboard they’d let a little kid play around on for half an hour.

I agree with @lxn889121 that a real upright piano would be another option if you have the room. I just looked on eBay, there’s one going free less than 5 miles away from where I live. They may well come up on local advertising sites.
