Eye Ulcer

FishFingerSandwichesWithTartare · 27/11/2025 19:33

Currently suffering with an eye ulcer. It’s day two, it’s not horrific, I have had them before far worse but I feel really achy and flu like as well. Anyone out there with eye knowledge who knows if this is all linked in please? Thank you.

Has the ulcer been confirmed by a hospital eye dept and treatment started etc?

FishFingerSandwichesWithTartare · 27/11/2025 22:07

Yes, ulcer was confirmed yesterday so hourly drops day and night for 24hrs, now on to 2 hourly day and night for 48hrs, then 4 hourly for 48 hours.

It is something the ophthalmologist said yesterday to me (well not about it being syphilis (or however it’s spelled!), it can be linked to the hpv virus.

Do you mean HSV not HPV?

Oh and just on the off chance you work with eyes or have knowledge of eye ulcers, this is the forth I have had in 2 years, just wondered if you might be able to offer me any insight as to why. I have googled but multiple ulcers (always the same eye, different positions) don’t appear to be that common! Thank you.

I had one years ago. It was pretty bad and I was really ill with it. Awful experience. Do you wear contact lenses?

FableLies · 27/11/2025 22:21

I went through a period of having corneal ulcers. Nearly lost my eyesight in one eye because treatment was delayed by an arsehole doctor who refused to call an eye specialist out at night. Thought I'd simply put something in my eye despite a letter from my optician.

I believe mine were linked to monthly wear contacts and a flare-up of blepharitis. Had them over a period of two years, then none. First one was awful. Flashing white lights, pain.

Hi OP yes I do work with eyes in emergency Eyecare normally! Did they say if it was viral? If related to herpes zoster (chicken pox/shingles virus) or herpes simplex (cold sore virus) the virus will lay dormant in you can occasionally resurface, especially if you’re run down or already poorly with something else. It’s not uncommon for someone to get repeated ulcers in this situation. Other things as people have mentioned above could be being a contact lens wearer (don’t know if you are!) and having blepharitis (common inflammation of the eyelids) but specialist would have probably mentioned this if present. Hope you’re feeling a little better today, they’re horrible things 😖

Hi. I’ve had the herpes simplex virus in my left eye since I was a child, now in my 60s . I now have permanent scaring, so it’s important to seek help asap.
I don’t get it very often now, but if I’m stressed or tired I can feel it starting I use the ointment straight away, and usually ward it off. It makes me feel really poorly though I’ve spent days in bed as a child and teenager , but then the treatment wasn’t as good then. Hope you feel better soon .

Thank you for replying! She didn’t say which type as far as I remember but against the odds I have had shingles twice so I’m guessing it’s the shingles virus that I must have. When I get run down it seems to affect my eyes. I have worn contact lenses but didn’t for ages and now really limit their use; perhaps I just need to stop using them entirely. They are the disposable ones and my eye hygiene is pretty good I would say. Last time I got the ulcer I was told i had blepharitis and use an eye wash now on my eyelids and use that religiously. I feel I have broken the back of this ulcer and am now four hourly on the drops and feeling more human again! Thank you for replying.

Thank you very much. It definitely helps to seek early advice with it. Each time I seem to wake in the night with what feels like a pin prick in my eye and then I know to book an appointment at the opticians! I hope you no longer suffer with them.

Could u get it swabbed at a doctors etc. I know the sexual health do that when people haive herpes lr syphlis ( i know yours isnt sexual) the swab would say if its herpes, shingles etc then you can have the herpes tablets which cover shingles etc x

I've had 2 eye ulcers, both related to contact lens.

herbalteabag · 28/11/2025 19:20

I had an ulcer recently, linked to accidentally falling asleep in contacts. It's put me off wearing contacts, even though I'd worn them 30 years without any issues. They didn't think the cause was anything other than contacts.

Sarahpainting · 29/11/2025 09:41

Oh joy ! I’ve woken up with a cold sore on my eyelid. At least its not in my cornea 🤞
