Cheap printer with affordable replacement ink - any recommendations?

Our old Cannon printer is on it's last legs.

We don't use a printer all the time but it's handy to have. I'm looking for something which will do the job nicely but will not cost a fortune in ink, our current one uses up ink quite quickly and the replacements are not that cheap.

Any recommendations for an affordable home printer?

Following with interest as my canon printer is playing up.

If you can do without colour get a HP laser.

They are low cost, you can leave them for ages without the cartridges jamming up too.

I went from inkjet to laser years ago and have never regretted it.

That said, I don't really print pictures or big blocks of colour. If you do it can be really expensive.

Go for a tank printer. Game changer. Cannon no and Epsom all make them

IlovetoKnitandRead · 27/11/2025 12:51

Epsom tank printer! Amazing , ink is about £40 for all the bottles. We have had ours nearly a year and not needed new ink yet and we do loads of printing. We bought a mid range printer about £250ish

I have an Epson tank printer and it is as cheap as chips to run

I just buy the non branded ink so much cheaper! My dads one was HP replacement inks £100 - fake ones £20 and are fine!

Thanks for the advice everyone.

Another vote for Epson ecotank. Cheap to run, even using Epson ink, and prints great photos from my phone.

We have a tank printer, too.

Cheap printers, these days, are basically just a pathway to very expensive ink.

Roserunner · 27/11/2025 14:33

Definitely an Epson ecotank, I use mine for work (admin based) and crafting and a £10 bottle of black ink last me a year and I haven't replaced the coloured ink since i got it 2 years ago and they are still over half full.

This is a really common issue a lot of cheaper printers seem affordable at first, but the ink ends up costing more than the printer itself over time. If you don’t print very often but still want to keep costs low, there are two good options:
1. Ink tank printers (best for cheap color printing) Models like Epson EcoTank or Canon MegaTank use refillable bottles instead of cartridges. They cost a bit more upfront, but the ink lasts for thousands of pages and is much cheaper long-term.
2. Monochrome laser printers (best for documents) If you mostly print text, a black-and-white laser printer (like Brother models) is very reliable and toner lasts a long time without drying out.
I’d personally avoid very cheap cartridge-based printers, because they usually have the highest cost per page and need frequent replacements.
Also, whichever printer you go with, it’s a good idea to occasionally run a quick test print to make sure everything is working properly (especially if you don’t use it often).
It’s a good idea to print a quick test page just to make sure everything looks right.
It helps catch issues like faded text or alignment problems early.
