If you grew out your grey, what was the worse stage ? And when did it start to get better ?

Liek how long in the process did it start to look better

Why do so many of web start the dying process 🙈 I swear nearly everyone would look better if we let it happen naturally and gradually

I grew mine out 10 years ago, and at the time I had a chin-length bob. I think the worst bit was probably the earlier stages when it just looked like I hadn’t bothered. When more had grown in and it looked intentional, that was better. Also the more it grows in the more motivated I was to to continue and I also could see what colour my hair actually was! Also the more my natural colour was around my face I could see how much better I looked with it. Your skin tone and natural hair colour complement each other and I looked so much better.

I now have my hair very short and with hindsight wish I had just got a buzz cut instead of watching it grow out!

Go for it!

The early days were worst.

im naturally blonde but used to colour my hair brown. I stopped 7 years ago and the dark colour growing out with a mix of blonde and grey roots looked awful.

When the brown eventually all grew out (I had a couple of drastic haircuts too to help get rid of it) the remaining blonde & grey blended nicely together.

I'm in the middle of growing my grey out. I have shoulder length mid brown hair that I have bleached. No bleach since February.
I've now got ear length, fairly dark hair, with about 70% grey that is a sort of beige/blonde. I also have a very white streak at the front. Love that bit.
My strategy is to look after it,style it well and then ignore it. I think it probably does look a bit weird but I don't look in detail and try to forget about it.

It’s such a big change if you’re used to dark hair. Like @Seeingadistancemine looked worst at around 3 or 4 months at the I haven’t bothered with my hair stage. A year on and the line of growth has faded and I keep having a chin length bob so that each time it’s cut I can lose more of the orangey brown bits. I actually really like the grey now and use a blue shampoo and a decent conditioner and I think it looks ok.

I reckon I still have about six months before all the old hair is gone, but I’d say mine now looks like a choice.

how I wish I had nevrer started to cover the grey. I do not miss the dying and root spraying 😆

I had hair around chin length, though shorter at the sides and with a fringe. Original colour was dark brown but I started going grey aged 16 and dyed it from my late 20s onwards.

I stopped doing so four years ago and, like a PP, once I had a few inches of regrowth it was obvious it was intentional, though honestly it looked horrendous, especially once the brown-dyed hair faded to orange. As it progressed I chopped off as much of the dyed hair as I could bear (I don't suit very short hair), to speed things up. After a year it was effectively grown out.

I was very happy with the result for a couple of years but, now the novelty has worn off, I plan to start colouring it again, probably a very light brown. My type of grey has that yellowish tinge to it which I don't like. Using purple shampoo has helped but the brighter, more silvery, grey clashes with my skin tone. So back to the semi-permanent I go :-)

They say it takes ‘a year to the ear’ so you can get a broad idea of how long it will take from that.

I think after four months there’s enough regrowth that it starts to look deliberate - rather than you just haven’t got round to doing your roots - and you can get a sense of what your grey pattern will be.

At this point you need a mindset change to enjoy the process and discovering what it will look like. I knew someone who kept dying her lengths as the dye grew out because she couldn’t stand how brassy and orange her brown dye was fading to!

Often there is less grey than you believe. A centimetre of grown out roots looks so stark that you think you’re ALL WHITE but once it comes down there’s much more of a mix.
