Hairdressers model

I’m going to a hair salon this afternoon as a model for an apprentice. Will I be charged anything? I assumed, rightly or wrongly, that it would be free. (I intend to give the girl a decent tip).

Anyone else been a model?

When I was a child - many years ago - I occasionally was used as a hairdressers model by a local hairdresser and my parents didnt have to pay anything.

As an adult I lived at one point near a Haidressing School and there you could go and get your hair done by one of the apprentice hairdressers for a nominal fee.

I would have thought that when you made the appointment the matter of payment or not would have been made ckear to you.

I've been as a model recently and charge for a wash and blow dry (long, thick hair) was £10 on the first visit and £15 on the second. I've no idea why the costs were different, but was still happy and added £5 tip. HTH

I’ve seen adverts locally looking for models , there’s usually a £10 charge mentioned
Same with nails , they want to practice and charge 5-10 for this too.

If the salon is in a college or university it’s usually free. If a private business they tend to charge but it’s very cheap. I paid £8 for a wet cut and blow dry.

The appointment was made last evening through my local Facebook group. I’ll message the girl and ask I think is best.

It’s free so I’ll give her a £10 tip, does that sound ok? Or would you give more?

I pay to be a model unless they are being assessed then it’s free. I always tip too.

What is she doing? I'd give more personally as salons are a fortune usually and if you're happy with it, you've already saved lots.

When I did it in London as a skint student it was totally free. I used to go to Vidal Sassoon and Toni&Guy. Never tipped (see skint student above) but it wasn’t expected, you essentially gave them permission to maul your hair.

I then moved abroad and modelled for a famous salon and used to get paid, but it was for shows and demonstrations, not for students learning. I had pretty indestructible hair then, so I was sought after for the more drastic colouring and treatments. I once ended up with cornflake scalp so stopped, but it was a handy income stream at the time.

Sounds good to me.

I gave her £20 in the end as I’m very pleased with what she’s done.

I’ve only had my hair cut and coloured by trainees for 20 years now and have never had a bad experience let alone a mauling 😁. It’s in a high end salon and the trainees are supervised. It might take longer than a regular cut but I like that as they seem to really listen to what you want. The supervisors often give my hair a final tidy up and as they are senior stylists who charge well over £100 just for a cut and dry I know I’m getting a great service.
I think it’s fine not to tip but as I’m older and can afford it I like to.
