Strange scalp pain - help!

Does anyone else get this? Two parts of my scalp, at the back of my head (like where your skull curves outwards, if that makes sense!) are tender as if they are bruised. It doesn’t hurt constantly - just when I touch there. It’s been a few days. I’ve had this before and the tenderness just vanished but this is going on for longer and making me anxious!
I don’t have a headache or any other symptoms. It’s purely like I have a bruise on my scalp - but I haven’t done anything at all to cause a bruise. Top of head and lower scalp are completely normal.
It seems like such a vague thing to trouble a GP with, hence my appealing to Mumsnet!

Do you ever suffer from migraines?

GarlicHound · 27/11/2025 07:36

I get that, I think. It's my hair follicles. I've no idea why they go through highly sensitive phases! I'm told autistic people often have this.

Is it your hair? Try moving it about to see if you get the bruise-press feeling. If not, I guess it's still not worth worrying about unless it becomes properly painful or gets scabby, blistered or anything. I've had scalp psoriasis, but that was more itchy than sore (and cured with T-Gel shampoo).

That’s a good question. I had one awful migraine as a child - now I sometimes get what apparently are hormonal migraines, with sickness and lethargy rather than a headache. But I don’t have that at the moment while my scalp is tender…

You get it too? Yes, I can feel the tenderness when I move my hair around…

I do get a bit of itchiness in the same area, actually, but no reddening or flakiness.

I get this when my hair needs washing! It’s really random!

BeWellJ · 27/11/2025 09:00

Possibly scalp psoriasis- that can lead to soreness and itching.

The shampoo that works for me is T-gel dry scalp (yellow one). There is also one called T-gel therapeutic shampoo which I know lots of people recommend.

BeWellJ · 27/11/2025 09:01

I would suggest trying a few different shampoos for a few weeks and see if it helps. If not your GP may be able to prescribe a topical steroid.

Thanks for replying. Yes - I’m going to try a T-gel shampoo recommended by another poster.
