How does this work for your front door in your house?

For your house, does the front door automatically lead into your house or are there two doors ie one door which leads to a porch/place to shoes and hang coats which then leads to another door that actually leads into the house?

Also, is it possible for houses to install a sort of shelter extended above the door so that if it’s raining, people don’t get drenched while waiting outside?

Our house (and those around it) have a front door which opens directly into a hallway and a toughened glass sheet hung above the doorway outside to shelter the doorway from rain. If you stand right up against the house and the rain is largely vertical this works well, if you are a tall man or standing behind a small child while you unlock the door then you are too far back and line up with the drips of collected rain off the edge of the glass sheet instead....
I've also lived in houses with a small room on the way in to act as a wet-clothes airlock, and houses where the front door opened straight into the living room just behind the sofa - it depends when your house was built, afaict.

Current house straight in. Yes there are companies that sell ready made door canopies. My last house had a small porch entry which while not big enough for coats was very handy for deliveries if I was out.

We have a small room for coats and boots between the front door and the rest of the house. It is an extension added by previous owners. When a room like this is inside the house it is called a vestibute, when it is outside or partially so, it is called a porch.

Door opens into the hallway but there's a substantial tiled canopy that projects about a metre out into the path. It's a joint one with next door and 4-5 people could stand under it and not get wet.

Proper front door never gets used but does have a porch over it. The door we use opens into a sort of square hall with the kitchen, downstairs loo and sitting room off it. This is a massive shoe dumping ground/ trip hazard. You would just get wet outside if you had to wait but I guess could wait under the porch for the other door in amongst all the Evri packages that also get dumped there.

I have an open-fronted brick porch where you can stand, with an alcove for parcels and where I put gardening tools, but it does not project from the front of the house, it is recessed inwards. The front door opens into the hall. There is no room for an extra internal door because it leads in two directions. My previous house was similar

I like it that way, I would not want to enclose the porch by adding an outer door.

I sometimes think about adding a portiere rod and curtain over the door for winter.

I occasionally think about putting a canopy over the back door which is exposed to driving rain in coastal storms.

We have put a chunky wood canopy over our rear patio doors
Its quite big and plenty of space under for an outdoor shoe box type thing and outdoor rug, and a coat hook on the wall but under the canopy, plus a few chairs
So in wet weather we use that and leave shoes and coats there .. guests do too
Its a covered seating area really that’s attached to the house so good for many uses

We have steps leading up to a double front door that is set in the building, so is sheltered. That leads into an internal porch area, then the main central room of the house. Have added a photo of the similar cover we have, plus one that could work for you. Blue door for you, wooden is like mine if that helps! I'm from the US, in England so our home is modeled slightly less traditional by UK standards I guess.

I like both your pics, to my eye the first looks rural and the second looks town.

We have vestibule, with a further door opening into a hallway.

Lifebeganat50 · 27/11/2025 12:50

Our house is a chalet bungalow so there’s an overhang to stand under. We the have an inner porch (built as part of the house, not an add on) then the hallway. It’s good at this time of year as you close one door before opening the other so ALL the heat doesn’t fly out of the door!

ForkOnASausage · 27/11/2025 12:57

I have what I feel is called a storm porch. A covered area in front of the front door but not an add on but part of the house. Like a typical 1930s semi detached house would have with the front door set back. Dh will not enclose it because it would be small and all 4 of us can fit under it whilst the front door is being opened.

My front door leads into my hall.

Ahfiddlesticks · 27/11/2025 13:09

We have an open porch - some of our neighbors have added doors to enclose it but I find them really annoying. We keep wellies in the open porch but other shoes and coats in our hall. Of

One door, open onto the stairs. Kitchen on way, living room the other, No hallway. I miss having a porch.
