Please explain soft close toilet seats to me….

My workplace has two cubicles in the ladies lav. Both seats were damaged and after a bit of a wait replaced with soft close seats. These were very unpopular as it didn’t seem possible to keep the lid propped open in use….it ended up resting on your back or clothes (shudder). Fortunately they were so flimsy one was broken quite quickly and I spent £30 of my own to buy and install an old fashioned wooden replacement. The second also broke and has now been replaced again by another soft close which won’t stay propped up in use. Are they being installed incorrectly? Is this how they are meant to work?

Now some of you will suggest I speak to a manager. Where I work most questions to managers elicit a shrug and “dunno” .

Sounds like they just don't fit? We have soft close and they rest on the back of the toilet unit when opened.

Ok……so it sounds like they should stay propped up when properly installed….our facilities people must just be clueless….thank you

All soft close loo seats here and all stay propped open when in use.

I hate them, we have them at home (a mistake we just couldn't be bothered to correct) but the lids should definitely stay up when in use.

Horrible The though of the lid closing on your back, it might prove problematic for blokes, assuming there are no urinals.

Just replaced my loo seat at home with a soft close (I have no idea how so much wee had accumulated under the screw covers! 🤢) and it definitely stays up either completely eg. for a man to pee or just the lid if you're sitting down then softly closing when you put it down either way.

Sounds like they're not putting very good loo seats on!

My soft close stays up.

I prefer them to the heavy wooden seats we had previously.
