Calling all Emma Bridgewater experts!

I ordered this mug for a Christmas gift for an Emma Bridgewater fan as I know they don't have this one. It seems to have a small flaw in the inner printing on the mug which is disappointing. Is this kind of thing typical for an Emma Bridgewater Mug or should it be even and joined up? It says inspected by Karen on a sticker on the underside. I didn't get it off the Emma Bridgewater site but I did pay full price for it off another website and I'm worried it will seem like I've bought a cheap seconds mug rather than get a proper one.

Any advice?

I am glad you are getting a replacement.

I have a few Emma Bridgwater mugs that I chose because of the design and, as it happened, I purchased a couple with flaws that were sold as seconds. None were even close to being as badly 'flawed' as that.

Well, I'm impressed you got a replacement - TBH the company you bought from sounds better than Emma Bridgewater direct! My mum bought a mug of hers as a present for my DP who loves birds, and was then mortified because it had multiple SPAG errors (it was one of those ones with a bit of text about the birds on it). She complained and got a reply saying nonchalantly that EB's husband does (or did; I think they're divorced now) wording for the mugs and he's dyslexic, so what do you expect?

Hmm

It stuck in mind because it was such a cheeky piss-poor reply.

(I want to point out now that the SPAG demons have judged me for that post, and I had to edit not once, but twice, for typos. Mind you, I'm not currently selling my badly-spelt MN posts for 25 quid a pop, so ...)

Hi,
Definitely send it back.
If you'd got it from Emma Bridgewater website and complained they would have just sent you a replacement no questions asked and told you to keep that one.
IME they are very good with quality issues.

Calliopespa · 27/11/2025 23:31

There seems to be quite a bit slipping through quality control lately.

I ordered a mug with name and the spacing was so off. It was reminiscent of posters by schoolchildren where they fail to predict how much space it needs and have to curve it at the end of the line to fit it in. It wasn't quite that bad obviously, but not nicely centred and some of the letters packed tighter than others. I'd have thought they would have some kind of system in place, eg: 5 letter names tend to require starting x cm from the handle or something. But obviously not!

“What do you expect?”
The utter cheek of it! 😮

I do like their stylings, but I think they are starting to get a bit arrogant with the "hand- sponged" "idiosyncratic creativeness" line of thought.

It's a line that is easily crossed into the realm of lack of sufficient care being taken.

I had an issue years ago when I ordered a large order of pieces of a discounted pattern. All items (so mugs, plates, bowls, side plates) were accepted as an online order, but I then had a notification that the order had despatched but was sadly missing some items ( from memory all the plates and bowls) which had sold out, never to return. When I pointed out that I could no longer make what had obviously been intended as a set so could I please cancel the order completely, they couldn't have been more flippant: no it's on its way and you will just have to pay return postage - which, for a large heavy order, was a lot. I just don't understand why they could not have held the partial fulfilment aside and contacted me before despatching it, given it was clearly intended as a full set.
