What time do you have Christmas lunch/dinner?

First time hosting this year, which we are really looking forward to.

When it’s just us, we have it whenever it’s ready.

Just wondering when other people eat on the day?

OP posts:

We probably aim for 1.30 - 2 ...and then in reality its about 3pm that we actually eat.

Prelim · 26/11/2025 09:06

Around 5-6pm (so very late lunch/early dinner territory). We’ve never been fans of a massive lunch and Christmas dinner is so big we want to limit the amount of meals we have! My family are pretty laid back, so as long as the drinks are flowing and there are some nibbles, nobody really minds.

Although, we usually have a cheese course around 10-11pm!

dementedpixie · 26/11/2025 09:06

We eat at usual dinner time so 6/7pm

Usual supper time so around 6.30. We have starters - prawn cocktail, salmon blini, calamari etc for lunch.

Nourishinghandcream · 26/11/2025 09:19

Usually around 2:30-3pm.
Most of our wider family seem to be pretty much the same.

onesidedstripe · 26/11/2025 09:32

Usually around 1. I’d be far too drunk to produce anything edible after that.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 26/11/2025 09:39

For years now, we haven’t had 🎄dinner until 5 or 6. It used to be at about 3 - until the year when I had far too much Buck’s Fizz and completely forgot about the roast potatoes - they weren’t even parboiled - so dinner was eventually at around 5.

Everybody was that much more ready for it (the turkey stayed hot well enough) so we’ve had it at that time ever since. Plus, it makes for a rather more relaxed day for the cook. TBH I never did understand Christmas dinner at 1 pm!

When we’ve had small Gdcs staying, they’ll have something simple at their usual lunchtime, so no problem there.

stargirl1701 · 26/11/2025 09:41

6pm

Fatiguedwithlife · 26/11/2025 09:42

following with interest as there’s a load of people this year. I think I would want to be rid of visitors by 5pm though.
if you eat at teatime (5/6pm- I’m northern!) when do you do the obligatory post dinner walk? Beforehand?

We do our walk while it’s all still in the oven, and well before it starts getting dark.
I don’t do starters, BTW, but we’ll have canapés (usually ready made M&S 😋) at least an hour before dinner.

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 26/11/2025 10:34

Usually 3pm.

When I was a kid it was 4 or 5, but I find it makes everyone a bit snack and booze hangry so we eat too quickly, plus the fact we do presents after dinner so it all gets a bit stacked.

I'd quite like it to be 2pm but wouldn't want to start as early as I'd need to for that.

Walk before dinner

It would be impossible to persuade anyone in my family to walk after all that booze.. it's presents and chessboard and more booze and monopoly or 80s classic film time

Sartre · 26/11/2025 11:11

About 4/5 pm.

Twonewcats · 26/11/2025 11:14

Start at 2pm, with seafood starter and pulling crackers.
Then leave the table for half an hour, give the kids a breather etc.
Then main course, then play a game or watch TV etc.
Then pudding.
Later we have cheeseboard if we're not overstuffed

MurdoMunro · 26/11/2025 11:16

There’s so little light at this time of year and I hate not being able to make the very most of it, so evening, 7ish, for us.

We have ours at 6pm. We don’t have a post dinner walk, I didn’t know they were obligatory 😂. We have a dog though so some or all of us will walk the dog mid morning.

Notlongnowthank · 26/11/2025 11:17

Usually about 2pm ish . This year for the first time as a Mum I don’t have any children at home for lunch so I think husband and I will just have buffet type food all day .
Am cooking Christmas Eve instead for about the same time.

Sounds a bit like us.

Late brunch, early dinner (effectively), then a late nibbly supper.

Sunnyside4 · 26/11/2025 11:18

Have it whenever suits you, OP. If it might be late, offer guests snacks or suggest tgey have a larger breakfast.

We tend to aim for 1pm, usually ends up being 1.15-1.30. I'd happily eat earlier though (when working my break is usually 10-11.30am so used to an early lunch).

Growlybear83 · 26/11/2025 11:19

We used to eat at around 4pm because we had both our mothers with us who claimed to be dying from hunger, despite always eating half their body weight in M&S party food at about 1pm. Now it’s just the two of us, we eat at around 6pm.

I’d say 2/3 is a late lunch 😂 5-6 has to just be dinner time surely

mummybearSW19 · 26/11/2025 11:21

We have smoked salmon and eggs for brunch, with nigella Christmas muffins and pain au chocolat…...
obigatory pigs in blankets whenever we fancy them
and obvs chocolate orange and the mint matchmakers throughout the day
so dinner / lunch tends to be whenever it is ready but consistently this is about 3/4pm.

which means dessert ends up being around supper / dinner time in the evening.

not sure what we would do if we hosted!!!!

my brother is hosting this year and is absolutely clear - everyone must be gone by 8pm!!! So assume we will eat at 2pm at his.

Spacesthatsing · 26/11/2025 11:21

Somewhere between 5- 7pm - closer to 7pm. We like to go for a walk and to the pub and then all of us make the dinner.

Wishitsnows · 26/11/2025 11:23

Usually between 3 and 4. Then have a light buffet meal around 9 or 10

Blueeyedtiger · 26/11/2025 11:25

Dinner at 1.30 then Christmas tea at 6.30 which is leftover turkey Brie and cranberry sauce sandwiches with salad, pork pie, crisps etc. the second meal is my favourite!
