Do they work?

Which one is worth following/buying?

Thanks.

I’d do something absolutely free like ‘voo’ breathing.

Thanks. I am looking for exercises. Have found some free ones that help, particularly when done every day. Wondering about the reset courses.

Neurosym made me worse.

Ghhhn · 12/12/2025 09:33

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow i am nervous about these as I don’t see the actual evidence. Box breathing has helped. Also having a frozen water bottle in case of a racing heart. Sleep is the best but I have terrible insomnia and worrying about it makes it worse.

They gave me insomnia too.

What is your illness?

Ive improved dramatically with meditation and soothing the nervous system.

I wouldn’t muck around with the vagus nerve. It can cause cardiac arrest.

BoxingHares22 · 12/12/2025 10:12

Take the deepest breath you can and then hum for as long as you can.

Im a cold water swimmer and it has done wonders for my nervous system. It’s not great time of year to be starting that though. A 30 second cold blast at the end of the shower also helps me (bearing in mind aim acclimatised):

For me, the best one was having a shower and right at the end, switching it to cold water and lasting as long as I could (2 mins was about my tolerance).

Afterwards, it made me feel really calm for at least 4-5 hours.

Ghhhn · 19/12/2025 08:24

Thank you. Will try the cold blast. Used to do open water swimming and that was magic.

I came here to say cold water swimming too. The cold blast is a good alternative especially at this time of year.

I swim in the sea every day and feel blissed out for hours afterwards.

I don’t know about vagus nerve reset, but two things that have a calming effect on me that is similar to box breathing and swimming, and that help me sleep, are lying on an acupressure mat and listening to the right sort of audio book. I do not do them at the same time, as I do not want to actually fall asleep on the pressure mat.

The acupressure mat is for any time, daytime or bedtime, but I always need a blanket over me to fully relax into the experience. The audio book is exclusively for sleep. It has to be unexciting, but not actually boring. It has to be either something that I know well or that does not have any complex narrative, so that I do not stay alert FOMO. I never listen to the same books when driving!

The effect of both of these is to distract both the conscious and unconscious mind from the need to stay awake. My focus is drawn to the sensations on my back, or to the gentle story, and I forget to stay alert.

The mat and the speaker to go under my pillow cost less than £15 each. Audiobooks are free from the library, and there are also many suitable websites.
