End of juries but for the most serious cases - end of a historical right?

History GCSE: The Jury - BBC Teach https://share.google/8pIFUsLZqABANYA

Since the magna carta I have always thought trial by jury though not a constitutional right was something enshrined within our legal system. Is getting rid of juries for a lot of cases a good cost saving measure or an undermining of rights as citizens?

I’m in favour of this, the general British public should not be trusted to sit and pass judgement on the actions of citizens. That’s what we have trained legal representatives for, not Dave the Builder who can’t even pronounce the name of his favourite weekend curry house properly.

I do wonder if most of the people who think this have actually done jury service? I was amazed at how much better I felt about the whole system after doing it.

Or more likely, I’ve been around Brits long enough to understand that they are the last people on earth I would want having the responsibility of passing judgement on their fellow citizens.

I'm glad I don't have such an awful view of other people as some on this thread!

Just Brits. People in other countries seem to be pretty fine and it might work for them. I think the Jury system was invented by the Romans (or Greeks?) so it’s not natural to the culture here.

What all 70 million of them?!

Well there were some good Brits when I did jury service - obvs you're not allowed to talk about what was said but let's just say I was pleasantly surprised that certain prominent myths were understood and challenged. Maybe we got lucky but I came out with a lot more faith in the system than I'd had previously. I realise this won't be everyone's experience.

There were ancient Germanic and Greek precedents, but the modern system of juries was invented in the UK, particularly under King Henry II in the 12th Century. You are wrong. It is natural to the culture here.

Oh wow, we really have stolen everything haven’t we! 😆 First football, then fish & chips, now claiming Jury duty too!

Is there anything we haven’t stolen from anyone else? I can’t think of anything.

Well no of course not. There are millions of hard working immigrants who have come to this country and made a life of their own, I don’t count them among the feckless types.
