Have you ever used black dye on faded clothes? Tips, please!

My son lives in black t-shirts and joggers. I am startled and a little ashamed when I compare them with new ones. Is Dylon any good? It seems expensive for the amount I'd need. Amazon has cheap alternatives but I am suspicious.

Hi OP, I used the black Dylon pod for washing machines recently on some faded trousers, etc and it was brilliant! I would definitely use it again. Paid about £8 for it I think. Hobbycraft sell them but I got it from eBay. Thinking of doing some bedding and towels next which have lost their mojo. Need to follow the instructions carefully though - I think we had to do three washes in total (prewash, dye, then a wash to set the colour).

I use Dylon to refresh back stuff and it’s brilliant, as long as you don’t do too much at the same time. You get the best results with half a load or loess.

Dylon is excellent. I usually collect together a bundle of stuff - tracky-bums, jeans T-shirts etc and bung them in. They come out looking really refreshed.

Yep, always use black Dylon for my black jeans when they fade and works amazingly well, gives them a new lease of life.
I’ve always dyed stuff, it’s much easier now than it used to be, easier on your washing machine and no salt needed anymore.
It takes time though, three long washes, one to dye, one to wash/rinse and one to clean the machine.

Oh good, I’d been wondering about whether I could do some black jeans. Is one clean out wash after enough?

Pootles34 · 25/11/2025 21:05

I wash mine on their own a good few times after. The machine normally looks... Interesting! But soon cleans up. Note that cotton takes but polyester is trickier, even cotton clothes will often have polyester thread so you might notice a contrast. Probably not so much if just refreshing the colour.

I'm of the Spooky Gothic persuasion and regularly redye my blacks 🖤🦇👻🧙🏼‍♀️🌙🧹
Here are my top tips for using Black Dylon machine dye (in the plastic pod).
It won't work on synthetics.
Wash everything first.
Put unfolded clothes into the drum with the dye pod, 40° cotton wash
Once that's finished, run on a 40° cotton wash again with detergent.
Take the clothes out and hang up to dry. I wouldn't tumble dry them, but then I usually dye jeans.
Then I run the empty machine on a 40° quick (45 min) cycle with a squirt of toilet bleach in the drum. (Dylon says to run another 40° cotton cycle, but I never do).
This approach always works for me, and I often dye non-black Vinted buys a lovely deep shade of black 🖤🖤🖤
