car stress - help!

Hallo

I bought a car last week. I was just looking through the paper work now and although the invoice says 58 000 miles, the actual mileage is 63931, so nearly 6 000 miles before. Additionally, the MOT that I looked at before buying was clear, the MOT done the day before I picked it up and which I hadn't seen has advisories on both front tyres worn close to the legal limit.

I like the car and would like to keep it, there is nothing in my budget that is as good.

I'll ask for new tyres. But what would you do about the mileage? It is on the finance paperwork, which gives an annual limit of 5000 miles, so by that measure I will already have used up this years allowance.

And finally, obviously I should have checked the mileage, but I haven't bought a car on my own before, and I have a lot on in my normal life!

I would go back to where I bought it from and get them to correct it.

But I am a little surprised you didn't see the mileage, on the dashboard, when you were test driving it. Or even just sitting in it. Surely that would be one of the first things you'd look at.

The tyres are legal so they won’t do anything about that but the mileage is an issue.

Do you have a copy of the original advert?
Did you take a picture of mileage at collection?
What mileage is listed in the finance agreement?
What mileage is on the invoice from the dealership?

Compile all of the above and go back to the vendor and your finance company.

Mileage on invoice is 58000. Mileage on the MOT that was done the day before I picked it up is nearly 64000. It was advertised at 58000, but unfortunately I didn't screen shot the ad.

Wierdly, mileage on the service history is listed at 58 000, and that was a month before the MOT. I can't make sense of how that can be true.

58000 also listed on the service agreement.

Speak to the garage? What do the previous MOTs state, you can view these online

shreddies · 25/11/2025 19:09

February 2025 MOT was clear. March 2024 had advisories on the same front wheels:

  • Offside Front tyre wearing bad
  • Nearside Front tyre wearing on the edge's

November 2025 says

  • Nearside Front Inner Tyre worn close to legal limit/worn on edge (5.2.3 (e))
  • Offside Front Inner Tyre worn close to legal limit/worn on edge (5.2.3 (e))

I know fuck all about cars, but it makes me wonder if there is some underlying issue there that I should be worrying about.

If there's a cooling off period, I'd return it for a full refund. It sounds as dodgy as dodge. Stolen or written off and plate taken from a same model write off with the histories conflated. Does the chassis number on the engine match that on the log book?

shreddies · 25/11/2025 19:25

I haven't checked. It was from a main dealer, one owner, so I thought it was a really safe buy.

You must get the mileage corrected, you'll never be able to sell it on if a buyer does an online vehicle check and the mileage doesn't tally up.

Thanks yes, I will. Such a pain in the arse.
