Looking for work - apply for anything?

Last job ended September, I was on a contract.
The work was ok if a bit boring ( I was returning to work after a break and jobs that fitted around family) but I was bullied and glad not to be there anymore. Took me a while to process how bad it was and how it was allowed to continue. If I’d been permanent I’d have raised a grievance. Self confidence took a battering too.

I am going crazy now being at home and we are struggling financially. Applied for a few things, not shortlisted. Disappointed and worried.

So I really need to find a job.

Partner says I should apply ‘for anything’ Would I even be considered for jobs I have no experience in (aside from casual work as a student many years ago) It’s hard even getting shortlisted for the jobs I think I can do!

I have a wealth of experience in my sector, a degree, a post - grad. I’m smart, capable but heading toward 60.

Looking and applying takes a long time, I want to direct my energies properly.
Just looking for experienced and wisdom from anybody currently looking too. Thank you 🙏

Im in almost the same situation as you, fist sign on this morning. They said I could apply for jobs in my field for 90 days then I had to apply, you for anything. So far there has been nothing worth applying for.

KilliMonjaro · 24/11/2025 17:47

Of course you should apply for jobs you have experience of op.
What area are you in?

TartanMammy · 24/11/2025 17:51

It depends how financially stretched you are, if you really need an income the you need to apply for anything.

If you can hold off a bit longer and are more interestinged in career progression than cash in the bank then hold out for something closer to what you want.

How much do you think age is a factor in the knock backs?

CookingFatCat · 24/11/2025 18:24

The age thing I don’t know - they were both contracts I could have really thrown myself into, who knows.
I’m not even getting JSA as I was employed for a year and before that self employed so not enough employer NI contributions! That is a real pisser if I’m honest but nothing I can do.
I am mainly NHS but have worked in education and childcare too.

Bumping for more advice!
I’m also thinking that as has happened previously with job applications, I’ll either be met with over qualified so won’t stay in role. Or more often than not, tumbleweed. 🙄

Have you tried the charity sector op?

Jk987 · 25/11/2025 19:34

Only include the most recent few jobs on your CV. Remove the old ones. Remove all dates from your education - they’re not relevant. Basically don’t make it easy to guess your age. You do not have to disclose this information. Make sure your CV is punchy and interesting to read. Get some ideas for phrasing from ChatGPT.

Ponchodreams · 25/11/2025 21:00

Apply to places where you only have to upload your CV once (like the NHS). Then the form is there and you can just apply for whatever comes up. Many councils are like this too. Or go back through agencies.
