Best not junk food options when out and about, without spending the earth

I've come to the conclusion it's McDonalds!

I can get reasonable coffee and really nice porridge for less than £5 at breakfast, and their grilled chicken wraps are just as good as anyone else's, and wrap the day is £1.99.

I take a lot of snacks out with me in the car, in my handbag to try to avoid it, but the bottom line is theres not a huge amount wrong with wraps or sandwiches generally speaking

Not junk food. At McDonald's?

Coffee from a machine that tastes like dishwater. Lowest quality chicken pumped full of water and god knows what, a wrap with 50 ingredients. Mayo with 100..It's definitely junk food.

Low in calories if you pick certain things I guess.

I eat and enjoy McDonald's but I don't try and pretend it's not junk. Bring back the spicy nuggets!

Leon. Slightly more spenny but at least real food.

or just fruit?!

I tend to go for a supermarket meal deal. A smoked salmon sandwich, juice and a box of fruit make a lovely breakfast, and there are usually a few good options for lunch onwards.

Do you really think an M&S (or wherever) chicken sandwich has different quality chicken in it?

I usually take a banana in my purse, and/or cheese in a baggie.

muddyford · 24/11/2025 13:17

Made your own at home for a fraction of the price.

Specialagentblond · 24/11/2025 13:19

Packed lunch, supermarket meal deal. If desperate it will be a Leon, itsu or even a subway for something fresh.

OP what you describe isn’t particularly healthy. It’s just the least unhealthy.

SpiceGhoul · 24/11/2025 13:21

I always go for a subway salad if I have to get something on the go. I like the chicken tikka one.

JDM625 · 24/11/2025 13:23

I rarely out food out like that but would get a meal deal from boots or a supermarket, or subway.

Boots used to do a delicious grated carrot, rocket and hummus sandwich. Bottle of water and a fruit or plain yoghurt side would be pretty healthy.

SuperTroy · 24/11/2025 13:30

Well the McDs fajita wrap has less sugar and salt than M&S and more protein. Both are junk though if you look at the ingredients. McDs porridge is perfectly decent.

NotMeNoNo · 24/11/2025 13:30

Salad or hot soup from Leon or Pret or those Pollen+grace. Agree on Subway salads, they are great value. Box of fruit salad. Nuts. Sometimes you can find a carton of falafels/houmous.

From home: same as above. Jar of overnight oats. Home made bread sandwich. I was spending so much on this stuff that I've started making my own lunches.

NotMeNoNo · 24/11/2025 13:33

Or look out for local independent cafe's/ bakeries that do less processed options.

GetOverTheEgo · 24/11/2025 13:34

I'm in an area that does not really have the nicer chains like Pret.

I'm also newly vegetarian so have just gotten into the habit of taking a snack pack of grapes, nuts, some breadsticks and hummus with me when I am likely to be out and hungry at some point.

I did love a McDonalds though - can't quite beat a Big Mac. The McPlant is okay if you frill it up with extra pickles, but the fake meat they use gives me a stomach ache so I don't do that very often.

2dogsandabudgie · 24/11/2025 13:35

My go to when out is jacket potato with cheese and beans. Most cafes do them.

Not really no. But it's got granary bread?! Haha. Meal deal sandwiches are junk food as well probably.

But you can't say McDonald's isn't junk food.

Specialagentblond · 24/11/2025 20:55

meal deals vary considerably in quality and of course depend on what you choose but they are excellent value for money. I get pollen and grace or similar bowl, a pressed juice or water and some olives, fruit or a boiled egg for later.

Almostwelsh · 24/11/2025 21:13

McDonald's coffee is nicer than Starbucks.

juldan · 24/11/2025 23:05

Me and my daughter sometimes like to grab Itsu little rice bowls, which are just under £6. They are surprisingly filling despite the size and I am definitely not an under eater. I’m not a Mc Donald’s hater and do love a Mc Plant but feel hungry soon afterwards. The little rice bowl keeps me going for longer. You can add a tray of gyozas for a bigger meal and it is still relatively cheap.

Yes that’s always a good shout. Can’t eat it on the go though…
