Just that really.
About to have a hip replacement op and have been told to get these.
Any recommendations?

Completecareshop.co.uk has these and a large array of other aids you may find useful.

IT wasn't this exact one, but I found this style the best over 4 replacements between two people.

A litter picker is fine for picking things off the floor.

A Rucksack is good for carrying books etc. up and down stairs.

Do you not get these supplied to you by the NHS?
Before my hip operation I got given a sock aid and a grabber by the NHS. And I also had a home visit to assess how suitable my home was for rehabilitation and they issued me with a raised toilet seat and a stool to use in the kitchen.

The hospital gave my friend one to go home with.

My mum has had 3 hip replacements! (1 was a revision). She found most of the sock things useless! 1 would skate across the floor as she tried to push her foot into it. 1 would only work with very stretchy things like knee highs and didn't work with socks! She lives abroad so I can't recommend a specific brand. I'd ask the OT at the hospital A) if they have any to try whilst there, B) do they sell/rent them C) could they recommend a brand.

Not your question, but I'd consider those sketchers slip on shoes.

I'd get at least 2 of those long handled pincher things. Also a long handled shoe horn. You can buy telescopic ones which extend up to 1m.

I had mine done privately and they supplied them for me (at a cost!), along with a loo seat riser.
we also had chair leg raisers to make sure dining chairs and sofas were at the right height.
and this ice pack was amazing to help with pain (I can't take any painkillers stronger than ibuprofen or paracetamol or I vomit!)

there is a Facebook group called "Total hip replacement forum" which is really helpful (lots from America but run by a physio so lots of actually good advice and support!)
can't help you with the sock thing as my husband very very kindly and patiently helped me with mine.
i've had both mine done and it was the best thing ever.

I struggled with a grabber, found a long shoe horn with a hook on the other end more useful!

Chersfrozenface · 25/11/2025 19:14

I've had both hips replaced and although I was lent crutches, a raised toilet seat and elephant's feet for my bed with the first, and all those plus a Zimmer frame and perching stool with the second, I had to get my own grabber, sock aid and booster cushion.

I just got a sock aid like this and a grabber from Amazon. The disability aids shop down the road and specific websites charged daft prices for the same things.

This is not a recommendation but after my father’s hip replacement my mother caught him putting his socks on using her salad servers. Ingenious maybe but got him into trouble. 😂

Theoldwrinkley · 25/11/2025 19:32

I have to use sock aids and grabbed all the time! The sock aid pictured in 'chersfrozenface' is the one I have. It is excellent. For grabbers, the type with a sort of 'index finger and thumb' shape is better by far than the type of 'C' shape. I found the 'C' shape ones totally useless. And contrary to what you would think, the shorter length grabbers are more wieldy and are more useful than the longer length ones.
A higher seat chair is easier to get up from. And grab rails good idea in bathroom. I lend stuff out locally (free) so ask on facebook before spending money. And try things out before purchase if possible.

My DH had his hip replaced in July (Nuffield, paid for by the NHS). He was given the sock aid, a grabber, long handled sponge, two toilet chairs (to go over existing toilets), a perching stool, a booster cushion, and came home with crutches and a special loop thing to help him raise his leg to get in bed.

He's 77 and has been back on his bike doing 20 miles at a time. Hugely successful operation. I hope you get on ok.

My mum had a hip replacement earlier in the year. Just a bog standard litter picker was all she needed.

Sorry, no idea what I did 😅 anyway I've attached a photo this time of the one I have, now I can get my socks on no problem, even trainer socks

Didn’t use a sock grabber as too fiddly. Buy wrists straps for the grabber and walking sticks if using. You won’t be able to pick up them up if you drop them.
