4month old granddaughter seems to really dislike my teen ds

Possibly a weird one here.

My eldest dd (29) had a baby girl in the summer. Baby screams whenever she sees my 17yo dd.
It's really sad! 17yo understands that baby isn't being mean, but why would a baby react so strongly to her young aunt?

Bad aura or some weird woo thing?

Does she have those massive, painted on, scary eyebrows that the kids go in for these days? I think that could scare a baby. Or massive eyelashes? Or anything that makes her look less....human?

Could be as simple as a strong perfume

I've thought about this, but no, nothing outrageous. She has long hair, so We've tried going there with it tied up and not around her face. No luck.
Also doesn't wear perfume.

Does she wear glasses or anything scary, like unusual hair or a nose ring. Anything that a baby might not recognise as a face similar to parents face?

GiddyDog · 23/11/2025 19:47

My DD screamed bloody murder every time she saw a man with a beard as a baby/very young toddler. My poor BIL being the closest beardy got the brunt of this, although we did once have a very bemused waiter encounter her wrath. She grew out of it.

No glasses, but does have a tiny nose piercing.

I'll suggest she takes it out next time we go over.

Does she look quite a lot like her sister? My DDs and my nieces all had times when they got a bit confused seeing me and my DSis together, as we look fairly similar. Kind of an 'uncanny valley' reaction for babies: like mum but not mum, I think.

Odellio · 23/11/2025 20:28

I’ve had my DC get upset at my sister as babies. We think because she sounds exactly like me, our voices are nearly indistinguishable. So they freak out that it sounds like mum but doesn’t look/smell like mum.

BeaglingAroundTheChristmasTree · 23/11/2025 20:31

Maybe she smells unusual to the baby - a strong perfume or shampoo maybe?

ColdNoseDrippy · 23/11/2025 20:39

Mum is blonde, uses fabric conditioner. 17yo is dark, no fabric conditioner. Actually used the same shampoo as eldest today.
Baby likes me and older ds.

She just has to look at her from across the room and the bottom lip goes, and very soon develops into a full on, window shattering wail!

Cue stress all round!
