School assembly in the good old days and singing hymns! Anyone remember the 'Come and Praise' books!

I was thinking earlier about being a kid in the 70's/80's and how we would have school assembly. All lined up and then would have to walk in and sit on the floor cross legged in rows.

Then we would sing hymns from the book 'Come and Praise'.

I was trying to remember some of them. One was called Autumn Days and it went something like this:

Autumn Days when the grass is jewelled
And the silk inside a chestnut shell
Jetplanes meeting in the air to be refuelled
All these things I love so well

No I mustn't forget
To say a great big thank you
I mustn't forget.

Anyone else remember this book and the hymns within it.

I bloody loved singing these in school assembly!! 😂

Amaze in grace and Go tell it on the mountain we're my favourites!

Go tell it on the mountain, over the hills and everywhere!!

I remember that one.

Definitely - remember the book really well.

Have you been watching Sings of Praise today? The Autumn song was on there. I am off the see James B Partridge on his Christmas tour soon - he does lots of songs from that book.

RecordBreakers · 23/11/2025 17:58

Absolutely.

I was also going to say you should look up James. B Partridge on social media.
He's become very popular over the last few years. Even had a slot at Glastonbury recently.

EveryKneeShallBow · 23/11/2025 17:58

We didn’t have books. We had a massive board at the front with the words. My user name is a clue to one of my favourites.

Lobsterteapot · 23/11/2025 17:59

Give me joy in my heart keep me praising! - Absolute banger

InTheNotswolds · 23/11/2025 18:00

Yes! Our books had that picture in blue. Lord of the Dance etc. great tunes!

Echobelly · 23/11/2025 18:01

I much preferred the older hymn books with stuff like 'I Vow to Thee My Country' and 'To be a Pilgrim' in them and I got annoyed when they got used less and less for the more 'pop' hymns!

Your junior school might have used With Cheerful Voice like mine did.

I loved He Who Would Valiant Be, and When a Knight Won His Spurs in the Stories of Old, as well as loads of others.

Everyone used to sing their hearts out.
Might have helped that the music teacher was an inspiration!

That’s taken me back OP. I read the lines along to the tune - must be about 40 years since I’ve heard that song! I can’t remember what else there was, perhaps morning has broken?

TelephoneWires · 23/11/2025 18:26

I’ve just had a Google for the list. The ones we used to sing a lot were:
Think of a world without any flowers
Cross over the road
Travel On
Who put the colours in the rainbow?
when God made the garden of creation.
Said Judas to Mary
When a knight won his spurs
when I needed a neighbour

As well as the famous ones like Lord of the Dance, morning has broken, give me oil in my lamp and Whole world in his hands

We had very long assemblies at primary school (1960s), and sang lots of hymns, with the headteacher playing the piano. We had no books: we sang everything from memory. My favourites were:

When a Knight Won his Spurs
When Lamps Are Lighted
There is a Green Hill Far Away
I Love God’s Tiny Creatures
God Has Given us a Book Full of Stories
Daisies are our Silver and
All Things Bright and Beautiful, which we sang to three different tunes.

At secondary school, I don’t remember any singing assemblies after year 8 but in the first couple of years we sang things like
O Jesus I have promised
Give Me Oil in My Lamp and
At the Name of Jesus.

I much preferred the primary school hymns and could probably still sing most of them now.

He who would true valour see! (Let him come hither) - edit, this is actually the same one as To Be a Pilgrim I think

Such a lovely thread.

At my secondary school there were certain hymns we sang a lot that only my old school friends seem to know.

One of my favourites was "The King of Love My Shepherd is" and when we had it as one of our wedding hymns, only my old school friends sang along haha but we were loud enough anyway

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · 23/11/2025 18:59

Yes, we had that book, OP.

I loved singing at primary school. My favourite hymns were:

When I needed a neighbour
Give me oil in my lamp
Kumbaya
Lord of the dance

We also had a book of secular songs called Ta-ra-ra Boom-De-Ay.

We had With Cheerful Voice, I was at junior school until 1980. I’ve still got my copy.

NewUserName2025 · 23/11/2025 19:07

I recognise a lot of the hymns, but we didn’t have books in the 80s - the words were on the overhead projector at the front of the hall. Oh to have the job of changing the sheets! (I never did - I’m barely over it)

toooldforbrat · 23/11/2025 19:07

Primary School Bangers with James Partridge - I believe he's on tour!

Tequilamockinbird · 23/11/2025 19:15

I still have the come and praise book. I’m 46 😳

we saw James Partridge live earlier this year and he was brilliant! A really good day out. DH wasn’t particularly looking forward to it but even he enjoyed it. If he’s touring near you, I’d definitely recommend it.

No I didn't see that. I was just thinking about Autumn and then that song popped in my head and I started singing it. My DH was like 'oh my god I remember that from school' which sparked the conversation 😁

Yes ,I went to a very Catholic, Covent primary school though so we were either sat in the hall on the floor
Or quite often we had assembly in the chapel , just across from the school ( no longer there)
From my very early years I remember
If I was a Butterfly
And
I love the sun it shines on me God made the sun and God made me ( and various other versus, s)
