Will we get more child benefit now?

I see they’re scrapping the two child cap, does that mean I will get the same amount of child benefit for all my 3 children now ? Or is it only for certain families ?

Has it actually been agreed or is it still in the thinking about mode?

Hwory · 23/11/2025 13:06

It's not child benefit that will increase its the child element within uc. So if you already claim UC and have child element for 2 it'll increase to 3. However the overall benefit cap is still in place so you'll have to check if the benefit cap will apply.

BobblyBobbleHat · 23/11/2025 13:07

Are they definitely going to do this? I thought it was a maybe. I'm not sure whether it is actually an affordable option at the moment.

ahh, we don’t claim anything so wouldn’t apply ! I just thought it would include child benefit too. Silly me !

You'll already be getting child benefit for three kids ( unless you are over the earnings limit ) as that has never been capped.

noroomonbroom10 · 23/11/2025 14:06

You can already claim child benefit for 3 children.
The cap on child benefit is related to income on a taper rate at a certain point.
If you earn over the taper it is on the main earner to submit a self assessment form and pay back any thing owed.
If you are a stay at home/part time worker it is worth claiming to protect your N/I contribution and therefore your pension up to the time your youngest is 12.

howdoesitworkthenn · 23/11/2025 14:29

No I know I can get child benefit (and I do) but you get more for the first child than you do subsequent children as it tapers down, so I was thinking this would also apply to child benefit too and you would now get the same amount for all children. Or have I got it totally wrong ?! 😆

edited to add - we don’t want over the threshold so don’t have to pay anything back, we’re just under

You've got it wrong. Child benefit isn't changing. There was never a cap on child benefit.
The change is to universal credit.

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 23/11/2025 14:43

Hope not

ChristmasTimeChristmasJoy · 23/11/2025 15:26

There is no cap on child benefit its for uc. You already get paid for 3 kids? The whole thing is ridiculous.

Zanatdy · 23/11/2025 15:28

You’ve got it wrong. The higher amount for 1st child isn’t changing.

Shinyandnew1 · 23/11/2025 15:30

I think you are quite confused about what is being mooted!

You claim child benefit for all of your three children. This will not change, you can still do this. The amount you can claim for the first (or only) child for child benefit is slightly higher than the others-this will not change.

The proposed changes are for other benefits.

What’s ridiculous ? My question ? Sorry for being confused and asking fellow parents for some clarification

Child benefit has never been part of the cap. Its universal credit.

upinaballoon · 28/11/2025 22:21

The confusion arises partly, at least, because of the similarity of the terms. One benefit is called Child Benefit. The other thing is the cap that has existed on benefit allowed for children within the Universal Credit calculation. It has been allowed for two children only so the words 'child benefit cap', meaning the cap on benefit allowed for children has been thrown around a lot. I'm not surprised that folk are confused. If Child Benefit was called something like 'Family Allowance' there might not be the confusion. 😀

Blondeshavemorefun · 28/11/2025 22:23

Wouldn’t be child benifit as that pays out for as many kids as want

its the child element of uc
