What do you think of wall murals?

Thinking of putting a misty forest style wall mural up on back wall of my kitchen diner but I can’t decide if it’s going to look good or tacky. I know it’s down to personal taste obviously but just wondering what the general consensus is. The style of my house is fairly modern but with a bit of quirkiness

I don't think won't murals are tacky at all.
They've been trending for a couple of years now. They reflect the homeowner's personal style, and all you have to decide is that in the space you're going to put it in, the scene won't be overpowering or underpowering for that matter.
Choosing the right mural that reflects your personality can also open a room up make it look bigger make it look cosier make it more 'you'.
If it gives you pleasure, go for it!

Not tacky and they are removable if you change your mind later on. If I were to ever move from Wales again I think I would have a mural of Snowdonia or similar to remind me of home. I was actually rewatching Twin Peaks last night and some of the vistas are so stunning - they would make a fab wall mural and very in keeping with your misty aesthetic!

I really like them and think they can really make a room.

DD has 2 murals in the house she bought last year ( already there) One in the lounge is an abstract feature wall with muted earthy colours. She will be having it decorated soon but everyone says you are keeping the mural aren’t you?
The other one was a child’s bedroom one but she loves that too.
Go for it. Have something that makes you smile every day!

I don’t like them, but it’s not my house. You should have whatever you want in your house.

TwooooDoooozenRoses · 22/11/2025 19:42

I painted one in my child’s room, with help from my sister! It’s perfect for in there but I have to say, I’m not a fan in rooms other than children’s bedrooms. It’s personal preference though, do what you want with your own home I say!

There was one in our dining room when we moved in. Kept it after decorating because it filled a wall and we're rubbish at finishing a room with wall art, pictures etc but we actually grew to really enjoy it. It was a map and often the topic of conversation. It's gone now because we had to strip the wall back to brick for renovation. We also have mural wallpaper in the kids rooms and I love them.

I think they can really make a space. My dad painted a huge one in our childhood house, in the stair well to where mine and my sister’s rooms were. He customised furniture to match. He wad very talented like that. DS had one done by a local artist, painted on plyboard when he was very small. It matched the diggers and tractors in his curtains! He painted over it with blackboard paint a couple of years ago (he’d have been about 15).

I wish I’d kept the pictures of the 70’s sexy mermaid mural in my mum’s neighbours’ house! I wouldn’t inflict that on anyone but agree something a bit less outree could be nice

Always think of Hilda Ogden’s mural in Corrie think that’s where the tackiness started. Personally I think they can look good in the right setting

I believe that was a murial.

They can look amazing but you do have to be careful in where you put them and the styling around them. We had a misty forest one in an old house in the bedroom behind a bed and the colour palette in the mural set the colours for the rest of the room

For some reason I think they work best on northerly facing walls
