Does anyone get this kids mag and can you tell me what it's like? Wondering if it's a subscription is a good idea for a Christmas present.

I read this when I was little! It was fantastic. Sorry I can’t attest to current quality though

CatChant · 22/11/2025 16:20

My two had it for years and loved it. When they get older Oyla is a good alternative.

I should add kids are ages 11 & 8.
From the ads I get the impression its somewhat educational in an informative about the world kind of way?

Our DD was given a subscription.
From memory, it was a bit worthy and not much fun.
AFAIR, she often didn't open the package

LuerLock · 22/11/2025 16:29

My kids enjoyed it for several years (and definitely did open the package - there was always something for everyone in each issue). They eventually got bored so we get The Week Junior now, which they also love.

Thanks @LuerLock I get adverts for the week too. Which would you say is best for age 8 & 11? Both into things like history, science, geography. 11yo is dyslexic so a mag layout might suit her well rather than dense prose. 8yo is reading ahead of age.

They sound just the right age for Aquila and it has lots of history, science and geography. I think DS was about 13 or 14 when he progressed to Oyla.

I've just asked DD 12. She wasn't sure which was best for history, science and geography but she reminded me that Aquila has a different theme for each issue (eg Guy Fawkes, DNA or space). They will then do a deep dive into that topic with a couple of pages about the story of Guy Fawkes, a short story written from the perspective of somebody else in Westminster Palace when it was being searched for gunpowder, an article about how fireworks are made and what substances give the different colours, a step-by-step recipe for some Bonfire Night parkin cake, instructions for a craft activity that gives the effect of fireworks etc, plus their regular features such as the Letters page.

The Week Junior is more news and current affairs based (in a very child-friendly format) so also covers history, science and geography as part of that. If you subscribe, you get access to The Hub, an online area with lots of ideas for different craft activities, recipies and games. They also have The Debate each week where they weigh up the pros and cons of a particular topic, such as "Should school children be obliged to wear school uniform?". The Debate is my DD's favourite bit and always leads to plenty of discussion in our house!
