Do you have a crazy birth story? Like giving birth in a supermarket or a car?

I love reading other women's birth stories, particularly the crazy, dramatic ones! Stuff like women who have had cryptic pregnancies and don't know they're pregnant, until they go into labour. Or giving birth in a snowstorm and not being able to make it to hospital. Or precipitous labours that end up with delivering a baby in a Tesco carpark.

I've read all the Reddit and mumsnet threads I can find so I'm searching for more, whilst I'm lying around and feeling rotten in my first trimester.

I would share my birth story with my first dd but it was a very very average hospital birth. The most notable occurrence, was being served four miniscule, plain, boiled potatoes for my post-birth meal. Not even butter or salt.

Not me but one of the very young ladies on the ward.(19)
She had been in a nightclub at 1.30am told her friend she was starting her period so was going home.
Got home at 2am woke her mum up as she was in so much pain. Baby boy was born at 2.20am.
Ambulance didn't have time to get there.
She was showing everyone photos on her phone wearing a skin tight dress. How she had periods every month.
Unfortunately she didn't know who the father was.

Not me, but my ex manager was born on a bridge in the middle of Ireland 😂

UniqueBlueUser · 23/11/2025 14:48

Was in hospital due to be induced. I had a bath as was feeling a bit uncomfortable but not really contractions then had to be hauled out and rushed to the delivery suite in a wheelchair. Son arrived shortly after

I don’t have kids of my own, but a girl I went to school with gave birth with partner’s assistance on their bathroom floor. She was on the pill, still having periods, no noticeable bump obviously and never felt any kicks or anything at all…..rather a shock!

A colleague was aware she was pregnant a few years back and went to hospital on a Saturday at 30 something weeks feeling weird and having discharge. Sent home and told to stop being dramatic, first baby what do you know etc.

All week she had a bad back and hot water bottle. Friday she just didn’t arrive, no phone call or anything which was most unlike her. We called to welfare check and her Mum answered to say she’d been rushed in and all but gave birth in the hospital corridor weeks early because the midwives dismissed her. They got her into a room just in time when he was crowning 🙈

I was two weeks overdue and in hospital having had an induction pessary. They said it would take hours to take effect but within an hour or so I was in the toilet ax I thought I needed to go. Luckily a midwife came in and checked on me as she had a hunch, and stopped me oblivious giving birth down the toilet! I turned out to be 10cm dilated but I was able to walk to the delivery room

Catcooper25uk · 23/11/2025 15:13

July 2013 went to my final midwife appointment was rocking from side to side with what I thought was braxton hicks and the midwife was asking me how long ive been like that and decided to examine me I was 7cm dilated she got me an ambulance from the doctors surgery and we just got to the hospital car park about to open the doors of the ambulance to go in when she popped out of me.

Not as dramatic as some of these but was booked for a CS due to breech position. All proceeding ok, one of the nurses pops her head around the screen and says my womb is really interesting and would I mind if they took photos to our forward for some research and to be published.

No issue, crack on says me. Few minutes later baby out, husband goes with him and next thing it all kicks off due to bug bleed. People coming in and out and chat of knocking me out, luckily wasn’t needed as they stopped it but me and baby in HDU for a few days and then me having to have blood transfusions.

Glad you and baby were okay! What was so interesting about your womb??

Thanks, yes we were both ok after a week in hospital.

Apparently amazing looking blood vessels, whatever that means! Still wonder if the pictures ended up in some sort of medical journal.

I have never had a baby but I work in health (GP) and have been part of some lovely birth stories/late presentation pregnancies/precipitous deliveries.
A colleague saw a woman with severe abdominal pain.. in labour..”do you know you are having a baby? “ he asked.. “no , when “… i”in about half an hour “ he said.

33 years ago and second child, woke husband up as had backache, he roused a bit I went downstairs and looked at clock it was 1.45 am. Pain got worse so woke dh up properly and called mum to mind two year old. Into car at 2 am ish, as we drove round the corner my waters went. Told dh to go through the bloody red lights, he didn’t as there was a police car behind us, so told him bloody pull over, lovely policemen stopped and came to see what was happening while dh had a major panic. Policeman said they would blue light us the 7 minutes to the hospital at which point I told them not to worry as baby was coming. So our second son was born at the side of the road in the passenger seat of the car helped by 2 policemen one of whom had never seen a baby born before. After he was out and wrapped up in a police jacket we was escorted to the hospital. Perfect birth, no tears etc, baby happy and well. We arrived at the hospital at around 2.40 am and I was home four hours later. We had no boys name as I was convinced he was a girl so he was named after the two policemen, they kept in touch too. Dh still has a hot sweat when he thinks about that night he was utterly terrified, I was probably the calmest I had ever been for some reason.

I think this could be my favourite ever MN post!

My waters dramatically broke walking down the aisle at my sisters wedding. I stopped, panicked, looked around and then continued walking down the aisle. Only when I reached the end did my husband come and walk me outside through the side entrance. Wedding was halted for a short time for aisle clean up.

my sister has a sense of humour and came and checked on me and I felt fine to go back in and watched my sister walking down the aisle . I then quickly went to the bridal suite to set up some gifts we had all bought for my sister as I really wanted to do it before leaving for the hospital but ended up giving birth in her room.

My BILs wife went into labour during her sisters wedding - they made it past the speeches before heading to hospital…… still in her bridesmaid dress and BIL in his morning suit 🤣

FrangipaniBlue · 24/11/2025 12:38

Mine wasn’t exciting as such but after being on the labour ward around 4/5hrs they decided to break my waters….. as soon as they did I told them I needed to push but they dismissed me and said i was mistaken…..

I think my reply was “you don’t understand, I’m
going to push and there’s nothing I can do to stop it!”

DS was born within a few minutes.

It’s scary how many of these stories involve healthcare professionals dismissing women!!!

Vitriolinsanity · 22/11/2025 20:25

Not really crazy, but amusing. My consultant, typically charming chap with lots of pull, agreed that DS was mahoosive. As his due date was a Bank Holiday he used his consultancy pull and decided to admit us for induction on the Thursday. Arriving at the hospital his Registrar was rather put out and wanted us to go home. In his opinion DS was going to be “about 7lb”. Quick offer to call Consultant and he grumpily agreed to start the process. DS arrived on the Friday night (his due date) and weighed in at 10.5lb.

Registrar who was still in duty, insisted on a re-weigh, despite DS being visibly mahoosive.

All babies in my mothers side are 10lbers. I weighed 10lb 9. When you know, you know 😉

I had the opposite situation. All the drs i had with ds3 were saying he was going to be huge etc, kept testing me for diabetes, which i didn't have. I said at every appointment he will be just under 9lb and 53cm as that is how i grow them. Sure enough he was born 8lb 12oz and 53cm, just like his older brothers. My younger 2 were prem but I had them weighed and measured on their due dates just out of curiosity and they both weighed and measured the same as well.

muddledig · 24/11/2025 12:53

Not dramatic in the grand scheme of things but felt it. All the antenatal classes prepare you to be in labour for hours, neither the in person or online ones I did mentioned anything about a speedy birth. I woke up the day before I was supposed to be induced to the first contractions 5 mins apart and by the time we were at the hospital 40 mins later they were 2 mins apart and 2 mins long. Baby was back to back so took a bit longer to actually arrive but otherwise I think would have been done in about an hour. And I never got my epidural, still bitter about that! I’m very nervous about not making it to the hospital if have a second baby.

I think this could be my favourite ever MN post!

Was honestly so calm apart from poor dh. We often drive past the spot and always makes me smile. That little boy was the calmest baby ever and even as an adult he’s so laid back.

Newsenmum · 24/11/2025 13:04

Two stories, neither are mine:

  • someone giving birth in a tent at a yoga festival
  • ex colleague went home from work on Friday. We all got an email on Monday saying she’s started maternity leave! Was told she couldnt get pregnant, didnt look pregnant and didnt have proper periods ever. Thought she was dying in the bathroom that Friday night and the paramedics had come and helped her deliver the baby.
TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 24/11/2025 14:25

My waters broke ahead of by due date and as I wasn't in labour yet, I panicked and got DH to take me large shopping centre as I needed maternity bras. Of course John Lewis fitters were booked solid so in desperation I ended up in Rigby and Peller, bra fitters for the Queen ....... as you do.

Very nice lady took my measurements and was making polite conversation about when was I due etc etc when the first major contraction kicked in. The blind panic on her face was a picture. Fastest bras I ever bought. 😂

Zenbra · 24/11/2025 15:03

I started getting contractions that were very far apart for the first half an hour. Decided I'd have a bath while waiting for DH to get home. Contractions stopped whilst in the bath, then I felt a massive Contraction and my waters break. DH had just got home at that point and called the labour ward to say we would be heading up, by the time he finished on the phone, he realised I was quite far gone. He called the paramedics who arrived just in time to deliver the baby around an hour and a half after the first Contraction.

pleasekeepmeanonymous1 · 24/11/2025 19:56

Not as dramtic as others but.. I was 39 weeks pregnant with my second and took myself to bed because I didn't feel well. Spent about 10 mins in bed but couldn't get comfy and gave up, DS was born 20 mins later and delivered by DP in our living room. He called an ambulance but DS had arrived by the time the call was answered 😅

My first wasn't quite so quick, but I was told by the midwife that I had at least 12 hours of labour left, only for DS to be born an hour later.. only just got to hospital in time!

chipsticksmammy · 24/11/2025 20:11

All went ok in the end, but highlights include the cleaner mopping behind me as I walked up the corridor 😂A terrified student doctor watching my c section and going VERY pale as it started. The consultant commenting that DCs umbilical cord was one of the biggest he had ever seen…

the80sweregreat · 24/11/2025 20:18

An old neighbour of mine didn’t know she was pregnant until a month before the baby was due.
They were in shock , she had been having periods and apparently hadn’t any clue she was pregnant and had to have all the tests and scans on the sane day almost !
I worked with someone years ago whose mum gave birth to him on a ferry going over to Ireland.
I nearly gave birth in a hospital corridor with Ds 2, luckily we got into a delivery room in time!

Itsnaptime · 24/11/2025 20:21

Not funny but a wtf..... Id been in labour 96hrs and exhausted. My ex (babys dad) lifted me off the bed, climbed on and said HE was tired! I'm standing there like what's just happened? My mother went mental haha

the80sweregreat · 24/11/2025 20:27

I was astonished by the story on mumsnet of a lady who was in labour and the midwife was trying to chat up her husband and flirting like mad apparently! It seemed a genuine post, but it was so unprofessional of her :(

I could have ended up having an eventful birth but somebody had the sense to check me before I was sent home.

I was told I wouldn’t be in labour as I was too quiet and calm, they said it would be a UTI causing me discomfort but they reluctantly checked me before I was sent home. I ended up being 10cm and baby was born within the hour. There was no UTI.

My friend who gave birth around the same time had her baby in the toilet as she wasn’t believed to be in labour either.

Same. I was sent home after being made to feel stupid. Ex also thought I was stupid so he went to bed. I had first baby on my own with the cat helping
