Parcel delivered to me…it’s not mine

ohitssnowww · 21/11/2025 11:18

So got home from work last week and a parcel has been left behind my bin.
A man’s name and my postcode and that’s it.
No house number ,I’ve knocked on a few houses in my street and it’s not theirs.
Theres a elderly man next door but he’s not answering his door,I don’t think it’s his name either.
Should I contact Amazon? Or Just put it back behind my bin?
Surely Amazon took a picture
I don’t understand why nobody has knocked for it.

Is there a sender's address? Can you just hand it in to an Amazon drop off shop nearby? Obviously don't pay anything but just write RTS incomplete address on it?

ohitssnowww · 21/11/2025 11:26

No nothing, just a Amazon box ,I don’t have a Amazon shop near me,I’ve tried live chat but they have been useless and said that they will have informed the person who’s parcel it is and they will collect it from me

I would either open it or just chuck it in a nearby river.

PiccadillyPurple · 21/11/2025 11:51

Don't hand it to anyone - it could be something ordered fraudulently. If Amazon won't collect it, I would dispose of it.

JudgeBread · 21/11/2025 11:51

Just bin it, Amazon will have already replaced it. Used to work for Amazon and they're not interested in retrieving misdelivered items, they just replace. Well meaning people would often give us back things that had been misdelivered by other drivers - actual instructions from my boss when I asked what to do with them "keep it or chuck it out the window on the M6"

Try your local community Facebook page, it’s usually pretty useful for this sort of thing.

GlassofRosePorfavor · 21/11/2025 11:54

Open it woman

Open it woman

Yes!
Why would you bin it without seeing what's inside?!

UrbanFan · 21/11/2025 11:58

just open it!

I had something like this happen to me last year.
The reason it happened was because typically I have no packages come to the door but on that day I actually was expecting something that I had ordered.
So when I saw a delivery truck pull up, (it was either FedEx or Purolator I don't remember) I went to the door because I knew the guy was going to knock and I was going to have to sign for it.
And I remember thinking the package was a lot smaller than I was expecting but I was completely expecting a package that afternoon because I had just checked and it said it was on route and should be delivered within the hour, so I didn't think of it which was my fault. And I didn't check the full label address which was my fault, because the label had someone else's name, but my full address. House number, Street, postal code, but not my name.
But I had already accepted it and sign for it and as soon as I walk back to the house I saw the mistake and I ran back to the street yelling and screaming and waving my arms but it was too late, the truck was already zooming down the street.

So I looked at the package and I said well I have no idea who this person is but this is my address. So it's not even like I know it's a neighbor because I recognize the name. I have no idea who this is.
There's no other information on the box.
So reluctantly, I opened the box hoping that inside there would be some paperwork such as a contact, or at least a order number or phone number or something?
And there was nothing. The item inside was some kind of a phone. I didn't really look at it that closely.

So I called the shipping company even though I didn't have a phone number, and I ended up getting customer service, I told them what happened, and I told them that they need to pick up this package and it has to be soon because believe it or not, the next day I was actually leaving for 3 days. So this had to be taken care of immediately.

So the lady on the phone documented my story which was that it arrived, wrong name, correct address, but I signed for it, that I tried to flag down the delivery truck, but the package was opened, that there was no paperwork inside, and the item inside the single item is still there. And a few hours later a delivery truck came by and picked up the package. I signed for it being picked up, and I went away on my trip.

The weird thing that happened after that was, I received several letters in my mailbox that evening, and the next day, from a person who lives somewhere on the street, who said "hi there, I think you have my package"
Then "you have my package, I know you have my package, answer the door."
Then "I know you stole my package because I have online proof that you signed for it. You stole it & I'm going to call the police!!!"

So as soon as I got home and saw these notes on my mailbox, I called the delivery company again, they pulled up the file, I think I even got the same customer representative, and I told him what was going on. And she said we've already contacted this customer, we reverse figured out who it was supposed to go to and we've contacted them and told them that if the sending address is not correct and the item gets returned to their company their policy is that it has to go back to the sender, in this case it was some Warehouse possibly Amazon or something who knows... It has to be returned to sender. They can't just randomly drop it off at some other address. It was they as the buyers responsibility to make sure that the mailing address was correct which it was not, so now it gets return to sender.

But they were already informed of this on more than one occasion and what they what they were doing to me was harassment. She asked if I wanted to file a complaint and I said yes, I would like it on file exactly what had happened here, before I forget any details, I don't want anything left out because I feel that I did everything correctly and in a timely manner.
And she said don't worry about it, we've got everything written down, nothing more should come of this.
The package will be returned back to the distributor, more than likely the buyer will be informed that their package was non-deliverable, and if they want to have it delivered they're going to have to pay for delivery again and this time make sure that address is correct.

And that's what happened. And that was over a year ago, and I haven't heard anything about it since. And I never did find out who the person was, or how my completely full address ended up on their package and of course I never received any type of apology, but that's what I did and I would recommend that you do your best to document that you tried your best to get it delivered just in case somehow this comes back to you. Hope this helps.

Local Facebook page? I see quite a lot of posts on my one asking if anyone knows a whoever and 9/10 the person themselves comments or someone that knows them does.

Seawolves · 21/11/2025 12:23

I had this happen. It was a brushing scam, contact Amazon.

I would either open it or just chuck it in a nearby river.

Maybe this doesn’t need a response, but I can’t let it go without comment. ‘Chuck it in a nearby river’ would you really, actually do this? Actually throw a parcel in a river? There are other options, if you can’t work them out please let me know and I can list them for you.

Maryberrysbouffant · 21/11/2025 12:41

I think it’s some kind of scam where sellers deliver to random addresses so they can put fake “verified” reviews on. I see posts about it all the time on SM. It’ll just be some crap item.

merryhouse · 21/11/2025 17:45

have you tried looking up the name in the phone book?

(first Christmas in this house we discovered that someone thinks our over-the-road neighbours live at 23 not 13... I suspect they met on holiday in about 1970 or something because it's still going on a quarter of a century later)

I’ve just did 118 online and it comes up with the name and postcode but not the house number -so no clue where this person lives or if it’s some scam

What I don’t understand tho is the parcels don’t have my house number on just postcode -12 other houses in the street have the same postcode so why have they both been delivered to me

ItsInTheSingingOfAStreetCornerChoir · 21/11/2025 17:56

I would return to sender. I don’t want some random person calling at my home for parcels. Either he’s put the wrong address or the courier has made a mistake either way I’m sending it back. I hate those facebook posts when someone gets a parcel that isn’t theirs. I want the company to know that the recipient doesn’t live at my address.

thats the thing it doesn’t have my house number
just postcode
another 10/12 other houses in my street with same postcode
I don’t understand why they were both left here by seperate couriers when there’s no house number

Contact Amazon,

I had a reverse of this. My parcels kept getting delivered to an empty derelict house down the road.

When I spoke to Amazon they said that the actual house they deliver to in a street is determined by GPS. Apparently that saves delivery drivers driving up and down a road looking for a specific address. The GPS address recorded against my account was slightly wrong. They pulled up a map, discussed exactly where my house is and changed their records.

Have never had a problem since.

I would suggest that you let Amazon know they have a GPS issue for the person they are delivering too.

Manzana · 21/11/2025 19:18

I had something similar, two packages delivered within days of each other with a name I didn't recognise from my street, but my address. waited a week to see if someone would come for them, then opened them in case there was a delivery note, nothing, one was a tub of passata and the other gravy granules, very odd, and no follow up since, bizarre. Can't believe these items warrant a review.

PoppySaidYesIKnow · 21/11/2025 21:10

for people who are getting cheap random Amazon parcels delivered please check your bank account. This has happened to my son and he also had the amounts taken from his bank account. It was some kid of fraud so the bank had to act to prevent it happening again.

Brendathebear · 21/11/2025 21:19

It could be a brushing scam. I often got weird parcels, at one point I had a few per month - all cheap tatt and no return address to send them back. Thankfully, it seems to have stopped now
