‘Possibly the most prolific sex offender in British history’: the inside story of the Medomsley scandal | Society | The Guardian

This is truly disgusting.

Given the multiple 1000 post threads on Mumsnet recently about the Cambridge train killer, I wonder whether anyone will make any comments about this prolific heinous man's skin colour, ethnicity or religion?

If he were Muslim, Black, Albanian what would be the reaction on mumsnet?

‘Possibly the most prolific sex offender in British history’: the inside story of the Medomsley scandal

At a youth detention centre in north-east England, the paedophile Neville Husband raped and assaulted countless boys. Why was his reign of terror allowed to go on – and why hasn’t there been a public inquiry?

Not sure anyone ever said because there are Muslim or Black offenders, there are no white offenders?

I'd have thought it were obvious white people commit crimes

Summerhillsquare · 20/11/2025 13:07

Not just the vile man himself, but many accomplices.

Caution when opening up the article though, it's stomach churning stuff.

placemats · 20/11/2025 13:14

It's a very grim read but I urge everyone to read it. Young boys sent to correction centres in the middle of nowhere because of stealing or in possession of a stolen watch and their lives ruined by men who had sexual proclivities on those who were unable to consent. Add to that physical abuse, where self harm in broken bones meant a respite.

Totally shocking.

Pedallleur · 20/11/2025 13:15

It was endemic back then. Police, social services, the Church, public schools etc were places to hide in plain sight

dairydebris · 20/11/2025 13:21

Awful, heartbreaking piece. Absolutely disgusting that he was allowed early release.

Don't see the point of your race comment.

rainbowunicorn22 · 20/11/2025 13:22

its a sad fact that many children who were sent to boarding schools and remand centres were a sitting target for paedophiles. it is a sad fact that the people who were there to protect and take care of did completely the opposite.
I do know of a man who was the victim of abuse from a residential school in Wales, i cannot remember the name now but it was a big investigation a while back. this man who had been abused by so many he is now permanently in pyschiatric care as his mind was basically destroyed so he is considered not fit to cope in society. it is a very sad thing to see.
One of the worst paedophiles is Sidney Cooke

I sort of do tbh. Everyone knows about Asian grooming gangs, they use that as a reason to judge, mistrust, make assumptions about Asian men.

Here is clear evidence that, as another poster said, police, clergy, community groups, the justice system, freemasons were complicit in and perpetuating systematic abuse for decades.

yet we shrug and say ah yes the bad old days they were all at it. The scale of this is astounding. So many people aware and involved and they said or did nothing. They allowed it to continue. They kept these disgusting degenerates secrets for them. And almost all of them got away with it.

placemats · 20/11/2025 13:57

I agree @Sasssquatch

Crunchymum · 20/11/2025 14:00

What an evocative piece. Utterly heartbreaking.

What is most striking to me is that this seems to be a cover up.

It seems the lead detective, who left left very abruptly, could have potentially discovered something so depraved and far reaching the "higher ups" don't want in the public domain?

The victims have been given crumbs?

Disgraceful.

I'd urge everyone to take the time to read this Guardian article.

Exactly. The Asian grooming gangs are used as a "gotcha" catch all stereotype for all Asian men's opinions and beliefs about the value of white women and girls. As if their horrifying behaviour and the trauma they inflicted is representative of the Muslim community and culture.

Yet when these sorts of crimes are committed by white men, or people of the same race or culture, or those in respectable positions, they are dismissed as 'bad apples', anomalies, a different kind of 'monster' that is nothing to do with the mainstream norm.

Exactly. Along with priests - 99% white. Back then though there weren’t as many migrants in the country were there? No matter the colour of the skin abuse of children is abhorrent.

I’m more sure how much more depraved or involving anyone of much more power and influence it could be?

they just closed ranks and cover for each other. Those poor poor boys. Heartbreaking.

Swiftasthewind · 20/11/2025 14:08

So then British people, what do you have to say about the men in your culture having a problem with child abuse?

Sexual abuse has actually gone down every single year as migration to this country has increased. Now they say that correlation doesn’t always necessitate causation but I think it’s pretty clear that the take away from this is that white British men are the biggest danger to women and young girls.

Yet another positive for diversity!

You would, wouldn't you?

I saw a man on question time last week say most grooming gangs in the UK were Pakistani.

Nearly fell off my chair.

Somehow, when someone who is not white commits a crime, it's the whole communuty that's full of wrong'uns. When it's a white person, it's just a rare weirdo. Actually, heinous crimes are committed in all cultures.

As I say, I bet there will be no mumsnet threads taken over by people saying racist things about this dispicable offender.

The spit part made me throw my phone down on my bed.

I am so sorry this man did not suffer a long and painful elderly life. God help me, but i truly feel it.

I need to ask forgiveness for the sheer hatred I feel for this man and that, like so many others, he felt nothing of the pain his victims did.

Who were those police officers?

What exactly is your point you are trying to make?

Most people who have any type of knowledge of history in the last 100 years should be aware of the massive amounts of abuse that was dolled out through out institution and the cover ups. If you arent well thats the great thing about the Internet you can learn anything you want.

Why do you think back ground checks happen now?

But most threads on mumsnet are about current affairs and society now.

Dollymylove · 20/11/2025 14:27

Boys who were abused by white men were not believed and told to go away.
There have been several cases in the media of historic sex abuse by white men recently. The difference with the grooming gangs is that they knew the girls were telling the truth but didnt act

So can I presume that you're not a fan of past cases involving egregious abuse, both sexual and physical, being prosecuted?

No way am I reading the articles but I was ready to pop the bubbly because I thought the news was going to be the scum been murdered.
So disappointed....

Gasbox · 20/11/2025 14:44

What the fuck is wrong with (yes, only some but far too fucking many) men? One of the most horrifying things about cases like this (and others like the Pelicot case) is how easy it seems to be for these monsters to find other 'like minded' men. Exactly how many of them are actually walking amongst us? So many ruined young lives, it's heartbreaking and abhorrent in equal measure.

QueenClinomania · 20/11/2025 14:52

Institutional abuse is always covered up and victims rarely get justice. Vulnerable children get offered up and powerful men get protected. It is sickening.

Honestly, sometimes you have to wonder if the degrading Y chromosome is the cause of a lot of this shit. (I know. Debunked. But fuck me there's something truly wrong with the male sex!)

The brutality and depravity of men as a sex is undeniable, no matter how many wailing "namalt" and "women do it too" deflectors try.
