Gibraltar for a 3 night break. Will there be enough to do?

DH and I are visiting in the spring next year. Flying out Thurs, returning Sun.

I know its not a big place, but im assuming if we have one day put aside for the rock/gardens/tunnels etc and another day for a dolphin watching boat trio, the rest of the time we can eat, drink and people-watch?

Gibraltar seems to divide opinion, but I've always fancied going so would love to hear your thoughts (and recommendations if you have them, that dont include 'dont bother'as its already booked! :-))

I loved Gibraltar! It is small but really walkable. Go up the rock to see the monkeys!

HundredMilesAnHour · 20/11/2025 14:07

Well if you get bored, Spain is literally walking distance.

Oh wow, just stop…. And chill….. and enjoy….. you’ll be fine. Life isn’t a race, stop at a cafe, enjoy the local food and drink, and the locals! There’s plenty to do everywhere if you look for it.

Three days is ideal. The cable car has just closed for renovations this week and will be out of action for the next two years but there are taxi trips to the top of the rock. As you’ve got a few days though I’d walk up so you’re not rushed to get round all the sights up there. The Med Steps is the tough way to the top but 100% worth the effort or there are a few easier ways from the centre of town. Once you’re at the top the World War II tunnels are fantastic.

You can also walk around it (or there are buses). The botanic gardens are lovely and Casemates Square is good for people watching.

If you like Indian food go to Little Bay in Ocean Village, and try El Kasbah for Moroccan food. Both are amazing.

I live about ten miles away so I’m there quite often. It gets a lot of hate but it’s a fascinating place. Have fun!!

Perfect - thanks everyone!

@Notmybloodymonkeys - I'll put those on my list!

@Littlemissbubbblles - we will take time to people-watch and stuff - it's my favourite thing to do, but looking at other threads on GB on here, people frequently slag it off for not having much to do beyond the monkeys! 😁

we passed by Gibraltar when travelling from Morocco to Spain and I really liked it. We stayed for 2 days though, but you can definitely find things to do to enjoy your time there. There are some blogs that helped us organize this part of the trip, maybe you could find useful things as well here and www.ferryhopper.com/en/destinations/uk/gibraltar for example.

Hi

I don't recommend doing the Upper Rock and the gardens in one day.

It will take you all day to visit the Upper Rock. I recommend going up via the Med Steps then working your way back down. There's so much to see...Jew's Gate, St. Michael's Cave, Windsor Bridge, Rourke's Battery, Skywalk, Great Siege Tunnels, World War II Tunnels (my personal favourite), Moorish Castle.

The Botanic Gardens are lovely and require a different day, you could see them on the way to the lighthouse, and walk through town to the gardens, then past Rosia down to the lighthouse. If you are tired you can catch a local bus back.

As mentioned Little Bay and Kasbah both great. Vinopolis off the Piazza is fab too, and any of the restaurants down on Queensway Quay Marina.

Message me and I will give you personal recommendations, especially if I know dates. Join the FB groups they are very useful.

It’s very small but I like Trafalgar cemetery- just so interesting. I was posted to GiB when i army and the border was closed then. I loved it

curious79 · 26/01/2026 00:07

I reckon there’s about one day’s worth. The rest will be people watching and eating

TrickyD · 26/01/2026 05:24

It is not pretty. A council estate on a rock.

I may be biased because I was bitten by one of the apes.

Gib hospital very efficient. Back home our GP was thrilled to get something unusual to deal with.

PrincessofWells · 26/01/2026 05:31

If you like meat La Chacra in La Linea has amazing steaks for very little money. You need to be there around 7.45 - there's always a queue, opens at 8. Easy walking distance from the border or get a taxi.

Queensway marina is good for a coffee and perusing life.

I used to live next to Gib on my boat- great place ❤️

Read Paul Gallico’s book Scruffy as prep.

Me too. It was a disastrous day. My friend came to stay on our boat and we took her up the rock. I got bitten trying to get it off our rucksack. Went to the hospital, dh reversed into a parking bollard 😂

I love that book!

We will have an 8 hour cruise stop in the Spring. What should we focus on visiting please?

Florally · 31/01/2026 09:38

We went there with a a group ranging from 5 to 80, and every single person said it was the worst holiday they ever had.

So little to do, not pretty, the apes were actually terrifying. We left asap because they seemed quite aggressive and were stealing things like headphones from other families. (Although they also visited our hotel balcony, which was also terrifying).

My best advice to you would be change the booking to somewhere else.
