"she's a beautiful Handbag" names and pronouns for objects.

GrumpyNovember · 20/11/2025 08:00

I'll make an admission I am unwell at the moment so in all likelihood watching too much YouTube and light watching programmes and on plenty of medication.

But.

Can anybody relate to the annoyance of using pronouns for objects?

Also, I have noticed "she" is majority of the time a beautiful dress or an Handbag (arm candy 🤢) and "he" is a powerful Car.

My Bristolian relatives always did this. Couldn't tell you necessarily why a car was a she but she was.

Douchey · 20/11/2025 08:02

Yep, so annoying. Along with the hands, alllll the hands over-emphasising every word 👌🤌☝️👐

RuncibleSpoons · 20/11/2025 08:03

I notice influencers (who are basically sheep) doing this all the time with bags. It is so annoying.

They’re mostly she, right? Cars, boats, ships, motorcycles? Probably because the adjectives were more ‘feminine’. Sleek, streamlined, sexy, etc.

Anything else like a handbag is ‘it’, isn’t it?

Disclaimer, I am 55!

Bristolian here and came on to say exactly what you've said but you beat me to it.

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 20/11/2025 08:27

I’m fairly sure it’s almost always ‘she’. I’m also fairly sure it’s misogynistic. I’ve started paying attention, and so far I’ve heard a few women use ‘she’ fondly about a car, and a lot of men use ‘she’ proudly and possessively about desirable status symbol.

Planesmistakenforstars · 20/11/2025 08:29

I hate it too, but generally modes of transportation are referred to as "she" and with a female name (at least in English; I think Russian ships are referred to as "he.") I sold a motorbike to a guy once, who asked what "she" was called. He got really pissy when I told him it was a "he" and called Mike.

Invisablepanic · 20/11/2025 08:37

My nail lady does this with colours, I do find it a bit cringe. I'm 40 and she's about 30 so maybe an age thing.

Didwesayitall · 20/11/2025 08:39

I hate it and hate that whatever it is, it's always a 'she'. I've never heard "he" for a car.

Also since a pp mentioned the hand gestures, I nust say that I really hate the "clock it" finger gesture 🤏🤏 that's rampant online. It looks like people are pulling out something sticky and unappealing with their fingers. It's so off-putting.

(Edited to add the emoji for reference.)

Eurgh, this drives me mad too - it’s the new marketing style. Every email is now: ‘hey! ready for your Black Dress era? Meet The Denise! (The dress. All random clothing has names). She’s swishy, she’s serving classic, she’s dry clean only…’ (or whatever)

Didwesayitall · 20/11/2025 08:48

Also, the 'she' usage has been around since the beginning of time, especially hearing it mainly from men of all ages about their cars, bikes, etc. Probably a bit more recently and widely used by mainly women (and men) about everything else nowadays. Yes also companies and their shit faux-excitement marketing.

elviswhorley · 20/11/2025 09:05

Makes me ill.

ticktockitsNCtime · 20/11/2025 09:08

I’ve noticed this recently and it really makes me cringe. I absolutely hate it.

henlake7 · 20/11/2025 09:13

Have to say this one doesnt really make it on to my 'give-a-shit' meter.
Influencers doing that tippy tappy nail thing winds me up though....

Oh God! That makes me want to scream. Why do they do it? It adds absolutely nothing.

fishfingerbutty · 20/11/2025 09:19

In my yoga WhatsApp group, there’s often talk about the moon, always referred to as “she”.

Gettingbysomehow · 20/11/2025 09:20

I HATE it. Its so sexist. Everything pretty and cute is "she" and everything powerful and useful is "he". We aren't bloody French..
I have been known to say in shops, no its a dress not a person quite sharply.
Similarly all the gender crap reduces women to all that is cute, pretty and brainless. Its such an Insult to strong, sporty, intelligent and intellectual women.
Feminism seems to be going backwards and everyone is letting it happen.

Oh God "she's serving" ......just...no.

Politicians247UnderwearExtinguishingService · 20/11/2025 09:23

So if somebody is selling "a trouser", and - for some bizarre reason - you happen to want a pair and not just one, is that a he, a she or a they?

Oh I don't know. An aircraft carrier or a chinook helicopter could hardly be said to be either pretty or cute. There's a reason that we use the term 'mother ship'.

What really bugs me is when people refer to their cat or dog as 'it' rather than he or she.

Disturbia81 · 20/11/2025 09:33

Yep I used to hate ex saying she for all his owned objects.

Of course, both my cats are she. I'd ever ca them it.

MarcusRashvest · 20/11/2025 09:37

I HATE it. I noticed the last from Geordie Shore doing it in relation to dances on Strictly: “She’s a right cheeky minx, that one”. Awful.

GrumpyNovember · 20/11/2025 10:32

I'm sure I've heard HE for a car 😆 he's a super fast blah de blah blah.

We give our cars names - usually based loosely on the letters in the number plate or something alliterative with the make or model. Then it's just 'he' or 'she' depending on whether the name we end up with is male or female.

Our caravan has a female name, but that, ahem, sort of makes sense going on how she gets hitched to the car Grin
