Can I take a rucksack into a London theatre?

I was supposed to be working from home tomorrow so was just going to throw my phone and keys into a small crossbody bag but I've been called into a meeting on site which means I'll be leaving for London straight from work. I'll have my laptop with me which only fits into a rucksack. FAQs say not to bring a "large" bag. Mine is a medium sized Roka. TIA.

Depends on the theatre.

NConthe · 19/11/2025 23:49

Probably not but you’ll have to check the theatres bag policy. How could anyone here advise you better than they can?

Imisscoffee2021 · 19/11/2025 23:50

Might be okay depending where you're sitting but uncomfortable to have on lap and hardly any room under the seats too.

Kiwo · 19/11/2025 23:50

You could call and ask, but personally I wouldn't think twice about this. I carry my rucksack (also a medium size roka) everywhere...

I have which is where I got the "large" bag from - but what is a "large" bag? I was hoping someone with experience might reply. I'm sure I'm not the only visitor going to the theatre straight from work with a laptop.
Edited to correct mistakes.

I use a bag drop when in London but not sure I’m brave enough to leave a laptop in one.

Kiwo · 19/11/2025 23:52

Which theatre?

EmeraldRoulette · 19/11/2025 23:52

They'll definitely search it

You might be asked to check it into the cloakroom, but I think it's a medium bag rather than a large bag from what you're saying. A large bag would probably have to go into the cloakroom if it's going inconvenience other people.

The main thing is, they want to search it.

GovernmentFundedSteak · 19/11/2025 23:53

We've done it loads of times. They will search it, but if we've had a day out followed by a show there's going to be a bag involved.

Flibbertyfloo · 19/11/2025 23:54

I go to the theatre in London multiple times a year. I normally have the sort of backpack you'd wear to work and have never had an issue. They'll probably just glance inside if for anything illicit like they do most bags.

I'd interpet "large bag" as a backpacking rucksack or suitcase. You'll be fine.

TangyJellyTot · 19/11/2025 23:54

I feel as though a large bag might mean suitcase/cabin sized bag in this instance. I’ve certainly seen v large handbags in London theatres

BreatheDeeplyInTheSilence · 19/11/2025 23:57

Thanks for the reassuring messages. I have no problem with it being searched or being a bit uncomfortable because of it under my feet. It's the Palladium, for those that have asked (it's the Fast Show - brilliant!)

So Palladium... all theatres are different you know! Should be fine, last time I went there it was - if not then they have a cloakroom. Enjoy the show!

I don't get out very often 😂

Because many people go to London theatres regularly? Often straight from work?

Never had a problem OP (with my large Roka! ❤️)

Ah, well don't worry - you'll have a blast! Enjoy! I'm going to see Nick Helm - small theatre, massive chaos! Think I might wear my silver leggings!

HungreeHipp0 · 20/11/2025 00:20

I had a rucksack with me when we went to see Wicked in the summer with DCs. The staff just asked to have a look inside it.

Peanutssuck · 20/11/2025 02:10

Wembley say your bag must be no bigger than an A4 piece of paper. That's the general guideline. I think you'll be fine, but as someone who searches people's bags when they enter venues, please don't pile it up with a load of crap 🤣🤣

Bjorkdidit · 20/11/2025 05:42

The limit is probably similar to the free bag you're allowed on budget airlines, ie a small rucksack but not a large one.

I'd really suggest checking the theatre website as they should specify maximum dimensions, which could vary between venues.

But thanks for the heads up OP, next Saturday I'm going on a day trip to London and will probably want to take a small rucksack so need to check if I can take it in to the theatre for the performance I'm seeing.
