Dd1 would like a pan for Christmas that she can also use in the oven...

Any recommendations for a smallish one? Not overly expensive (uni kitchen).

She's cooking on electric hobs/in fan ovens, if that makes a difference?

Thanks!

Any casserole type pan is good for both.

lucysmam · 19/11/2025 17:40

Really? I've never used my casserole dish (metal) on the hob!

Really? I've never used my casserole dish (metal) on the hob!

I used mine every day. Had it 28 years.

A Cast iron Dutch oven! TK Maxx always have some in

SoScarletItWas · 19/11/2025 17:42

Aldi have cast iron pans similar to Le Creuset at the moment.

SomethingBlues · 19/11/2025 17:42

B and m have a range of cast iron lidded pans in atm that could be used on the hob or in the oven and look really pretty

soupyspoon · 19/11/2025 17:44

Any casserole dish, iron or metal. I have some small aluminium casserole dishes from Habitat, from hob to oven, perfectly fine

Or a cast iron one but they're heavy, too heavy for me these days

The problem with aluminium is that they heat up too fast if you want to cook things slowly so you just have to bear that in mind

HeadyLamarr · 19/11/2025 17:45

Yep, cast iron, stainless steel or enameled cast iron are all perfect from hob to oven and back.

Tefal make pans with detachable handles if she wants a more frying pan style that can go in the oven.

dontmalbeconme · 19/11/2025 17:47

One of these, currently 25% off. https://www.habitat.co.uk/product/7917684?region_id=04719m&gclsrc=aw.ds&&cmpid=cpc&utm_source=Google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=20339047658&utm_content=shopping&utm_term=&utm_custom1=&utm_custom2=785-748-9804&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=19672043441&gbraid=0AAAAABqA6lqBSRe97guUlg7o8mw_4TUrk&gclid=CjwKCAiA8vXIBhAtEiwAf3B-g-uEmp-1w3S7Sz7ozTZCndRMyMohek8Au_mK7QIxGR-Wl5Ov8fA5ghoCmUIQAvD_BwE

Come in different colours too, but not all are 25% off.

Ninja have some good ones and good quality but they are a bit pricey

Ikea stainless steel pans - for hob and oven . I assume you can get them seperately , , but these -

TomatoSandwiches · 19/11/2025 17:58

Cast iron is good but heavy and it needs seasoning and cleaning in a different way, you can't just chuck it in the dishwasher or use certain cleaning agents on it.

I reccomend pro cook, they were on sale recently and still may be.

TomatoSandwiches · 19/11/2025 18:04

This is a good mid range one, they also have a slightly better life long pan triple ply to look at if your budget stretches that far.

The tefal ingenio ones are great, the handles clip on and off so they take up less cupboard space and they can go on the hob and in the oven. We got a set though, not sure if they do individual.

soupyspoon · 19/11/2025 18:21

Enamelled cast iron doesnt need seasoning, I have several

My procook which is my biggest unfortunately has chipped in some places on the enamel. My Aldi is going strong and my lidl one

I see bloody Aldi have more of them in again.

JamieFraserskneewarmer · 19/11/2025 18:24

We have a procook one and a greenpan one - both brilliant for stove top and oven cooking - in fact, I don't really use saucepans at all now

I have a "Green pan" and a couple of "Thomas" pans that can be used on the hob and in the oven. I use them all the time. I don't like my le Crueset ones as much as they're just too heavy. Just warn her to try and remember how bastarding hot the handles get on any stainless steel pans that you put into the oven. I've burnt myself numerous times as you can easily get it out to stir, then lift it back in, forgetting the handle is now roasting hot. I guess because when you're using it on the hob, you can touch the handles perfectly fine, so you forget that obviously once it's been in the oven you need to handle it differently. I almost needed a skin graft on my hand a few years ago doing this, and I've still done it twice (not quite so badly) since!

FcukBreastCancer · 19/11/2025 19:35

A level cruset will last her a lifetime. Available second hand

ConBatulations · 19/11/2025 19:40

Something like this?

Scoville Neverstick Performance 28cm Casserole Dish - 922/2762 £16 in Argos for black Friday.
Cheap so doesn't matter too much if it doesn't last or gets lost or damaged. A stainless steel one would also be good.

The enameled cast iron ones (le Creuset style) are usually dishwasher safe but don't suppose they have a dishwasher in a student kitchen. Don't get a uncoated cast iron one.

DiscoBeat · 19/11/2025 19:59

I use a shallow cast iron casserole for that

JacknDiane · 19/11/2025 20:10

I got some out of asda recently

Onefortheroad25 · 19/11/2025 20:12

I bought a griddle pan in Aldi that can go in the oven. I really like it. Very heavy though. They have them at the moment.
