Is anyone else just not outdoorsy/low energy

I see so many people saying they love hiking, being outside in nature etc etc. I just cannot relate. I would love to feel like that but I simply don't. I like being indoors, or maybe on a warm day in my garden where I can pop in and out to the kettle and so on.

I can't imagine being the type of person who would enjoy donning my wet weather gear and trudging out in the woods in the pissing rain for instance.

I force myself to go out because it's good for my health (and for my kids), but I can't say it ever makes me happier than sitting at home with a tea and a book would.

Anyone else?? I seem to be surrounded by outdoorsy types 🤣

Me

I only leave the house to go to work or do the food shop

I hate leaving the house-im happy sat at home, doing my cross
stitch/reading/watching TV,knowing I have my snacks to hand and can have a cup of tea when I want one

If I'm around other people (apart from dp) I get home feeling drained

If I worked from home,id never go out (which would be very bad for me)

I love a block of days off as I can snuggle into my pj's and oodie and not leave the sofa all day

Its taken me years to figure this out (I tried to be the 'busy busy, out all the time person' but it just isnt me)

Notadame · 18/11/2025 10:36

I do work from home and I also home educated my eldest so we definitely have to force ourselves to get out

Well, it’s not a choice between being glued to the sofa/pottering within reach of the kettle and hiking for miles uphill in the pouring rain! I won’t head out on a long walk if it’s persistently wet or the visibility is going to be nil, but it’s certainly very possible to have a very pleasant, invigorating walk on a beach in weather that isn’t warm, or a stroll in the woods on a cold autumn or winter day. And considerably less dull than the gym or exercise classes.

This is 100% me. I have become much worse over the past few years since the kids left for Uni and I live alone. I can spend many days not leaving the house. I absolutely love it however feel horribly guilty that I should be doing something. I am happiest though doing very little I just can't help it. I work really long days (Nurse) so by a day off I am done in.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 18/11/2025 10:50

I have an outdoor job and, while I generally prefer working outdoors than indoors (I actually see natural daylight and everything!), my weekends are spent at home as often as possible. I like to relax, read my books, tinker about on the piano, and generally just have a day off from the world, as there are too many people in it at times!

If I'm visiting family in a busier location, I prefer walking my dogs in the rain, as they have the entire park and fields to themselves!

oldFoolMe · 18/11/2025 10:50

I hate the thought of leaving home but i love it when im out. I work from home so i force myself to go out every day to get fresh air, although i don’t really want to , I really enjoy a walk through the woods once I’m out, especially when its chilly but not raining !

BertieBotts · 18/11/2025 10:56

Me. I have very poor tolerance for temperature in any direction, bright sunlight makes me feel nauseous and headachy, and I find it a pain to be rugged up in hundreds of layers which is what it tends to take for me to not freeze outside. I would love to be in a temperature controlled bubble at all times. I'm also scared of insects Grin

I do like aspects of being outside but there are so many things about it that I find draining that it is very rarely worth the bother. In general I like to hole up on a sofa moving as little as possible. I don't like things like rollercoasters either so it's not about the effort, I dislike the sensation of moving. I think it's all sensory related.

TangoWhiskeyAlphaTango1 · 18/11/2025 11:04

I was miserable all summer which I feel awful for saying but the pressure to get and do something to enjoy the weather was draining. In winter I can hunker down without the guilt!

I do these things, I just don't enjoy them as much as I enjoy curling up on my sofa 🤷

Like today it's a lovely crisp autumn day. I'll get out because I know it's good for my health to get the steps in, but I don't actively WANT to, I'll have to make myself do it.

I agree. Often threads on mumsnet only get posted on by people posting about extremes though. There is a middle way. I love fresh air and being outside, but not in inclement weather. It is damp and cold today and I have a stinking cold, so when I finish work I will be a couch potato.

I love a crisp autumn day and if the weather was like that and I didn't have a cold I would be champing at the bit to be outside.

knowing I have my snacks to hand and can have a cup of tea when I want one

Why do you need snacks to hand all the time @Achewyhamster ?

elviswhorley · 18/11/2025 12:57

Me. If someone wants to 'go for a walk' I physically shudder.
But then I do get out a lot and don't drive so I feel I already have more than enough outdoor and walking around time.

TangoWhiskeyAlphaTango1 · 18/11/2025 12:58

@RampantIvy luckily we are all different eh?

HearMeOutt · 18/11/2025 16:57

Sort of. I’m a very low energy person and always have been, but I find lying about on the sofa or in bed makes it worse and once I’m up and out my energy levels improve. Once I sit down I find it hard to feel energetic again, so most days I do all my necessary errands without a break and only once completed will I sit on the sofa.

This time of year is particularly hard as the weather is just so vile, I have to really drag myself out but know I’ll feel better once I do.

I have to be honest though I don’t understand this mindset, is it less an energy matter and more of a social one? Not wanting to face the world or feel pressure to socialise etc? Because doing things in sunny weather is so much more pleasant and energy inducing than in the peeing rain and thick grey cloud.

ChamonixMountainBum · 18/11/2025 17:11

Nothing wrong with not being 'outdoorsy' although you won't find that many outdoorsy people who deliberately head out in the pissing rain for fun. As my username suggests I love the mountains and the outdoors in general and find that environment massively beneficial for my mental health (and fitness). Ideally I would love a big all day walk before finishing up in a cosy pub somewhere.

TheCheekySloth · 18/11/2025 17:33

Me im an introvert.
I got fed up of being dragged out to do things growing up, pushed, forced in to joining in with other kids, etc i hated it.
As an adult had 2 partners that was the same go here go there, lets go for a long walk, everyday wanting to go out.
I felt again being pushed in to it talking to people going places i had no interest in.

Tbvh the outside world i fear due to being called racist, offending someone or just having a different opinion, or just looking at someone in public may end up with a post about on mumsnet.

However i do like a nice walk at night better if its pissing down of rain get my umbrella and off i go. (yes im odd)
I love winter time.
I work better at night time.

Hikikomori sums me up.

I love walks in the rain.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 18/11/2025 17:46

I do like being outdoors, but don't really want to do much when I'm there. Except build Sandcastles.

henlake7 · 18/11/2025 17:47

Eh, I go through phases where I feel outdoorsy and active but it doesn't happen often!
Especially this time of year, I'd much rather be curled up on the sofa at home.
Luckily I can't drive so I am forced to go out walking to get anywhere!😆

ChamonixMountainBum · 18/11/2025 17:55

I love walks in the rain.

Weirdo 😂

NoMoreHotHols · 18/11/2025 18:01

Yeah, I got a dog for that reason, otherwise I’d get no fresh air.
Mind you, she’s now outsourced to the kids during the week because I have to work. At least they also get out.
I’m not very outdoorsy, it’s either too cold, too dark, too rainy or too hot. 😁
The only time I like being outdoors is when I’m doing sightseeing or am on a holiday.

manicpixieschemegirl · 18/11/2025 18:04

I’m not particularly high energy; you’ll never find me climbing a mountain and I find people who always need to be on the go extremely draining, but I love and need to be in nature. A longish walk most days in whatever weather does wonders for my mind and body, and I appreciate my relaxation time afterwards even more

We all enjoy different things though - the world would be a boring place if we were all the same.

bignewprinz · 18/11/2025 18:13

There's no place like home 😃

Other than my own garden, I much prefer being inside at home. I find outside overly-stimulating for a multitude of reasons...love the peace of my space.

I do walk or run 5K every day by telling myself it's for my long-term health, but I haaaaaaate it. Brings me not one iota of joy and is a constant fucking chore. My endorphins come from chunky socks, a cup of tea and my arse on my sofa.

Summerhillsquare · 18/11/2025 18:26

In phases or waves, yes. When life has battered me a bit.

Do you think it's just become a habit? If you do something enough it becomes your thing, eventually.
