After school care, ad hoc, does this exist?

DH has a new job offer, meaning more travel, we've weighed it up and it seems a positive if we can figure out after school care.
I am sometimes needed in the office until 5. So I'd need someone to pick the dc up from the school bus, walk them home, and give them a quick snack and just be there until 5ish.
I really don't want to become an employer and I don't want to beg favours from friends either (family all work / dont drive / are elderly).
How will I find this mythical person? We live in a large town without a university, so no abundance of students.
It would be a shame for DH not to take the job, but this stumbling block seems huge at the moment.

might seem obvious but after school club?

Luxio · 17/11/2025 07:26

I would be looking for an after school club either that or a childminder to pick them up after school but that would be at their house not yours.

Our school after school club is until 6pm and can be booked ad hoc. £11.50 per child. So more expensive than a babysitter but reliable and won't cancel if ill.

I'd see if an after school club would do adhoc - they quite likely will although it they were full some days you might just not get a space. Otherwise look at local babysitters - some won't want after school, but some might be happy with it.

I absolutely should have said, no ASC available, the school does a few little hoby clubs, but they finish at 4.30.

No CM available, they are like gold dust and seemingly get booked by the siblings of existing school kids, and only take the dc who want 5 days, I did enquire.

It seems impossible.

A willing 6th former may be happy to do it
you can ask school for refs / meet the parents
could really suit someone nearby?
other than that does your school have an after school club?

How old are the children?

Are there any babysitters in the area who would be able to do a few hours after school? You may have to pay for every day unfortunately to ensure you have someone even if you don't need every day.

10 and 7. I'd happily pay for every day, but would that make me an employer? I'm desperately trying to avoid all the extra admin that would involve.

It’s a tough one because it doesn’t sound like you’ll find a student if no local uni and I’m guessing 6th form will be home after the school bus…
Do you have a cleaner? Would they be willing to do some ad-hoc babysitting?
I know you said you don’t want to beg friends but if it’s not that regular and you return the favour with a reciprocating a playdate then I don’t think it’s that big of a deal- I certainly wouldn’t mind!

Cantseetreesforthewood · 17/11/2025 08:23

OK, our solution was a childminder who was happy to do ad hoc sessions. Looks like you've explored that option.

How much notice would you have of the required dates?

Any college nearby with a childcare or similar course? You'd need someone fairly consistent, or have a system to allow a stranger have access to your house.

TheNightingalesStarling · 17/11/2025 08:27

A sixth form/college student babysitter? Maybe 2 or 3 so if ones not available you have back up.
