Will this scar get any better?

I know it’s early days. I had a total thyroidectomy on the 20th October. I had emergency surgery the day after and was in hospital for a week.

was home for 5 days and then presented to A&E with an absolutely massive neck abscess which needed surgery on the Friday and then more emergency surgery on Monday as the drain blocked and I just felt absolutely horrific.

I had sepsis when I presented to A&E and I literally walked into triage and then immediately went into resus as a dr took one look at me and panicked.

So in 20 days I’ve had 4 operations in the same incision and 4 different drain holes. I know my neck has had a really rough time of it and I know it will get lighter with age but I feel so self conscious about it it’s ridiculous.
I feel like it’s wonky and off centre. I also hate the way the drain hole even is so much lower than my thyroid scar!

Yes it should. Give it a few months.

My mum had half her thryoid and a tumour removed when she was in her 70s. Once it healed, no scar was apparent.

Aww don't feel self conscious OP! Most people will think it's cool tbh. I'd have fun with it if anyone asked.... a pirate tried cutting my head off ect 😅

Do your scars usually recover well? I scar very easily from simple scratches so if it was my skin it would never get better 😅 but most people I know, their scars heal very nicely

There is no photo attached, but it’s very early days and you have had a very traumatic time, my daughter in law had this operation and the scar is unnoticeable now.

My cancer scar is still purple 2 years later 🤦‍♀️ but it’s on my shoulder and has also spread a bit. I’m hoping it will chill out

You’ll be fine, op, it’ll fade in time. I have a sizeable “zipper” scar down the centre of my chest from a heart operation, and a long scar down each knee from having them both replaced. It took a while, but they’ve faded nicely and I’m not really conscious of them at all these days. Bio-oil seemed to help, although it doesn’t seem to work for everybody - it’s cheap enough to be worth a try, anyway.

It also helps that I’m of an age where I have no more fucks left to give, frankly. I came through a lot of stress and pain to get the scars I’ve got, and I’m happy to own them. If anybody else has a problem with them, well, fuck ‘em.

Dermascar. Silicone therapy is the gold standard for scar treatment.

Use it religiously, until it’s completely faded, not just a couple of weeks.

Use silicon tape to cover it if you’ll be out in the sun, you MUST keep the sun off it.

Savlon scar prevention cream (from Amazon) is extremely good. I always scar badly, had a big gash across my forehead and it’s barely visible now.

You have had a horrendous time OP. I am sending all the healing vibes.

The thing with scars is that you want to avoid scar tissue. And the way to do this is to massage the scar area (on the outside of the scar as well) with something oily. You do get a lot of scar treatments that cost a lot, but really anything oil based will work. It is the action of massaging the skin that works the most.

I had skin cancer removed from my neck and collar bone, and I did this on advise from the plastic surgeon, and I just have a very light scar now. I did actually just use EA 8 hour cream as it was what I had in. Vaseline will work just as well. That is in fact what she advised me to use. It is only really telling that I had surgery there as my skin is a bit pulled to one side if you like, but no oil or massage will sort that out as it is the area that was cut away.

Bless you. My mum has a similar patch of scars following thyroidectomy years ago. I remember it bothering her for six months or so and wearing scarves etc but after a few months it massively faded. Still a “line” but skin coloured
