DS has asked for a Thanksgiving meal...

DS is really interested in having a traditional Thanksgiving meal. If anyone has made or been to one, what have been the must have dishes please? Turkey is obviously a given, also thinking of a sweet potato dish? Thanks!

My kids aren’t a big fan of the full thing. We usually have cornbread, creamed corn if I can get hold of some, candied yams (baked sweet potato and then add brown sugar and mini marshmallows then return to oven to melt), turkey crown or similar.

One of my sons wanted to try pumpkin pie, I found that they sell the cans of pumpkin puree on ocado👍
Interested in what you use to make cornbread (uk) is it a yeasted bread please 🤔

Yours sounds much more civilised than an American one 🤣 although I'd love to try and proper American thanksgiving dinner

I made one during lockdown and took a plate my elderly American neighbour. I added a green bean casserole and sweet potato pie. 😁

cornbread is a muffin. It is sweet in the north and unsweetened in the south.
I make mine sweet.

I also have a recipe for cornbread casserole. 😋

Can you buy Bob's Red Mill products there? If so, buy the cornbread mix.

Out of interest I looked at the Amazon UK site for it.
If the package doesn't call to add sugar, then add 1/4c to the mix. When it comes out of the oven spread butter on top and drizzle with honey.

Lovelyview · 20/11/2025 19:36

Everyone has to say what they're thankful for.

You need a Minnesota Salad….

I think. a family thanksgiving is a lovely idea. It would be interesting to discuss with him what the thanks are being given for and to whom. Perhaps the family and each other?

I don't use marshmallows, we use pecan topping. My dil likes it with a little grated orange or grand marnier added.

Sweet Potato Casserole - Tastes Better From Scratch

My favorite Sweet Potato Casserole recipe is topped with brown sugar pecan topping and can be made in advance, so it's ready to bake anytime!

Everyone has to say what they're thankful for.

Yeah, it's a bit cheesy but lovely. I usually do little place cards with a message for each of my kids. I'm grateful for you because....... I didn't do it last yr because I thought my teens out grew it but they all complained & told me they kept every one 🥲. I'll go back to doing it this year

SpuytenDuyvil · 20/11/2025 20:40

I just made this easy cornbread for the first time and everyone seemed to like it. I served it with honey butter. You will notice that it's in cups, not weights. newengland.com/food/breads/castle-hill-inns-skillet-cornbread/

What I would consider the essentials: Turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole. Turkey gravy, rolls. Cranberry sauce.

pumpkin pie

That isn’t our menu, but it’s the core tradition menu for our region. It’s what you would get if you went to a mid range restaurant or saw a picture of a Thanksgiving dinner in an advertisement.

We are UK. I appreciate it's an American holiday, but it will be nice to be able to spend time with DS with him actually being willing 😂

Why on earth does he want to celebrate thanksgiving, does he even know what it is? Why not just call it a family dinner?

That's not what thanksgiving is. It's a 'celebration' rooted in the torture, oppression and murder of over 90% of the American indigenous people.

White settlers took thier land by force, kidnapped thier children and women, brought disease that wiped out millions, shot the buffalo therefore taking away a large proportion of thier food, torched thier homes and literally murdered millions.

Have a shared meal and pronounce what you're thankful for by all means but calling it 'Thanksgiving' and stuffing your faces with modern American ideas of food does nothing for the memories of those killed.

We are a Canadian family so Thanksgiving is in October for us but our meal is roast turkey and we usually do dauphinoise potatoes, sweet potato casserole (with marshmallows and pecan crumble - if you like salty/sweet then you will like this!), cranberry sauce, gravy and then any number of other veggies. We might do roasted beetroot, carrots with feta and pumpkin seeds or a broccoli salad. Puddings in our house are always pumpkin pie with whipped cream and then usually a cheesecake.
