MIL: the quickest way is the way you know.
Ex-colleagues: the hardest thing is keeping your mouth shut.
DD: I would rather have sat it off (aged 10, invited to walk her big dinner off).

End stage arthritis prior to knee replacement, bone on bone, hideous pain, no amount of medication was touching the sides; my dad - have you considered pain killers?

shellyleppard · 14/11/2025 22:52

@Macaroni46 makes you want to scream doesn't it x

Knittedanimal · 14/11/2025 22:54

From my four year old, when i was complaining about the long winter ahead,
'But mummy, you have the most amount of spring ahead of you.'
And from the other one, aged 3
'You might look fancy mummy, but you smell horribly'. 🤣🤣🤣

Echobelly · 14/11/2025 22:55

'Don't have sex on a beach, the sand gets up your fanny' - My mum 😅

GingerPaste · 14/11/2025 22:56

My own pearl of wisdom: you get what you put up with (from other people).

Arlanymor · 14/11/2025 22:57

My dad - today actually when he randomly dropped by and I told him about something difficult: "It's not selfish to put yourself first. If you don't, no one else will. Please just go and do it now." I love my dad. He gives me permission!

DontBuyANewMumCashmere · 14/11/2025 23:01

"Get on wi' it" - both my parents

After moaning to my 9yo DD that I'd found an unidentified bit of smth in my bathwater (yuck, was it a leaf? Hair? Insect?)
She said "at least it's not snakes!" and this is now our go-to reminder of positivity in the face of adversity!

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 14/11/2025 23:04

"You buy cheap, you buy twice" - my Granny - though she was usually using it to justify the purchase of something utterly fabulous 😆

catontheironingboard · 14/11/2025 23:09

My dad: “Any fool can get married”

laterbriefing · 14/11/2025 23:38

My mum on relationships: ‘what you see is what you get’. Honestly, that one bit of advice has helped me run fast from a few bad ‘uns!

BeOchreGuide · 14/11/2025 23:48

Ou I love this thread!!

"You've made it through 100% of the days you've been alive so far, you can get through this"

SconehengeRevenge · 14/11/2025 23:55

You can only knit with the fish you've got.

Very wise!

Brightbluesomething · 15/11/2025 00:09

Shy bairns get nowt - my lovely (late) Grandma

Allthesnowallthetime · 15/11/2025 00:17

"feeling guilty is not an emergency"

(when it's false guilt caused by other people's expectations. It's a reminder to think about whether to respond to that feeling by saying yes or to wait it out)

ThePure · 15/11/2025 00:44

‘Try your best. Angels can’t do better’ my dear departed Nana.

ShamrockShenanigans · 15/11/2025 00:46

My Irish dad:

"Nothing in life is so bad that it couldn't be worse" 🤣

I'm still not sure if that was supposed to cheer me up or not??

@AllthesnowallthetimeI prefer, "Bin the guilt. It serves no useful purpose...unless you've murdered someone". 😉

Love this one - reformed people pleaser who has learnt the art of the subtle fuck off.

GameofPhones · 15/11/2025 02:15

From my dear Mam
"Oh they'll never get to the moon"
"Don't get above your station"
and Dad "You can't have beauty and brains"

Love the pearls of wisdom from kids.

WhatIsTheCharge · 15/11/2025 02:22

My paternal grandmother: “Never chase after a man or a bus….there’ll be another one along in half an hour” 🫠🫠😂😂🙌🏻

DilemmaDelilah · 15/11/2025 09:27

You can't change what is done. You just have to do better in future.

Surelyitsajoke · 15/11/2025 09:50

It’s crude but eventually was true

My EXBIL always used to say ‘pussy will pull you where gunpowder won’t fire you!’ 😳

His brother (my EXH) turned out to have the same attitude by having 2 affairs during our toxic marriage!

That's very Irish, but somehow also very Jewish - I can totally imagine that being said in Yiddish!

ReceiveIt · 15/11/2025 10:05

Ex Mil:

'Small kids, small problems' this turned out to be very true for me. As they get older and we navigate friendships, puberty, hormones and SEN I yearn for the days when the biggest problem was the red cup or the blue cup.

Me:

'In life, things are either good or they're free' I think I stole this from an episode of Desperate Housewives but its so true!
