We need a new TV - any recommendations?

Our 20-year-old TV is starting to die - just in time for family coming to stay for several weeks over Christmas.

I was thinking Black Friday might be a good time to get a new one but have zero clue what to look for. We want something simple - it doesn't need any in-built add-ons. Just a good picture, big enough for watching films, easy to set up and built to last.

Any recommendations?

I can't recommend a particular model number, but we've had our LG smart TV for 9 years now and never had a single problem with it. So as a brand might be worth checking them out as a starting point? I'm sure more tech savvy people will be along soon!

We have an LG bought last year. Some dramas with dark scenes are almost impossible to watch the screen being too dark. Bush from Argos are cheap and cheerful but dont last long. Will go back to Samsung next time

That's interesting. It would drive me mad. Not sure how to do this but will look for one that has greater definition at extremes of light and dark.

LG here. Very pleased with it.

LG or Samsung, Sony if you feel rich. Oled definitely. Personally I wouldn't bother with uhd (unless you want a massive screen and sit very close), but hdr and built in streaming would be a must. Size wise, this is my geek answer, for hd you don't want to be closer than 1.5x the screen diagonal, so a 48" gives optimum viewing at 6-10 feet.
