How hard is your young person fining it to get a job?

Dapplesun · 14/11/2025 13:45

DD is 18, she’s applying like crazy, it’s been weeks and she’s only had one interview in person! Couple of phone interviews…no job as yet! I’d say 90% of the time she hears nothing back at all! She’s not been fussy, and started applying for anything after a while in desperation. She’s well presented, drives and has a car, well spoken etc and has lots behind her, are agencies the way forward now? Don’t know what to suggest next she’s getting depressed about it and said she feels like giving up, it’s knocking her confidence. (She does volunteer already too and has done for the last 3 years)

Could she try temping just to bulk out her cv and give her something else to draw on in interviews.

elevenpiperspiping · 14/11/2025 13:47

What sort of job is she applying for?

SilkiePenguin · 14/11/2025 14:01

If she's getting interviews she's getting close. My hasn't had any issues but have heard lots who have. Mine does sporty jobs which I think helps as its 5 hours doing sport and 8 in total on feet which cuts the competition down. Hers have been zero hours contracts but plenty of work.

She could try agencies. Think about skills she has and if there's any area there will be less competition in such as sport - can do a lifeguards course if a swimmer. Or could she work hours that would suit something seasonal or touristy those can be easier to get if you match availability and many won't. RHS was recently advertising for Glow in Dark gardens though might have passed now.

Yes I know wgat you mean. Dd 16 had an interview for Christmas staff at Sainsbury's which she thought went well but she was unsuccessful 😟

elevenpiperspiping · 14/11/2025 13:47

What sort of job is she applying for?

She really wanted something outdoorsy initially, so went after a few animal, forestry type apprentice jobs, then started applying for everything from office, retail to cleaning etc…she’s willing to do anything and any hours! Poor kid can’t seem to catch a break

It is incredibly hard
AI is eating jobs

FIaps · 14/11/2025 14:17

My 18 year old is in the same position. She's just got a role doing voluntary work at our local Oxfam shop to get some more work experience, because she's getting nowhere looking for paid work.

We used to have apprentices at my work place, this is the first year we've not taking any, purely because they're making people redundant, so obviously can't take on anyone new.

GoodThings2025 · 14/11/2025 14:32

What about doing Royal Mail over Christmas? Then get some volunteering going into what she really wants to do. Once you get stuck in a job you don't want it's hard. Is it because of UC that she has to keep applying?

Leagueofus · 14/11/2025 14:33

has she finished college? Any plans for further education?

SilkiePenguin · 14/11/2025 14:59

Toby carvery always seem to be in need of staff, probably not the greatest of jobs but there seem to be adverts for Christmas staff as well as normal staff.

https://www.tobycarvery.co.uk/jobs#/

Might be worth looking at zoos if you have any close by and not done that already.

SilkiePenguin · 14/11/2025 15:03

It might be worth doing a course at college in something like painting, plumbing, electrical, carpentry if she would consider that as they seem to be in shortage though need to be careful re safety - I've seen some female only companies.

Chasingsquirrels · 14/11/2025 15:11

My eldest graduated last summer and had a job lined up from a summer internship but didn't start until Jan. He got supermarket work around this time last year (having been unsuccessful earlier in the summer). It might not be what she wants long term, but worth applying as could get her into a job and they have more openings atm than normally.

ColesCorner7814 · 14/11/2025 21:08

Yep, my 17 year old was applying for part time work for around 4 months before she even got an interview. She has retail experience and was applying for retail jobs. Around 30 applications and barely got a handful of replies. The first interview she had, she got the job as she is very chatty and personable, but getting that interview was so hard!

ReturnsAdministrator · 14/11/2025 21:10

Home care companies are always looking for staff who can drive but the DBS waiting time might be a couple of months.
Warehouses normally recruit seasonal staff around this time. Also supermarkets.
I suppose it also depends where you are, we are desperate for Christmas temps but are struggling to recruit because we are fairly rural.

Judellie · 14/11/2025 21:30

There always seem to be ads for supermarket delivery drivers, if she'd consider that? Or florists may need delivery drivers too

Happyholidays78 · 14/11/2025 21:39

I agree it's tough out there, my 18 year old son has luckily got an apprenticeship but applied for over 25 apprenticeships this time last year. His friends that have gone off to university can't get any part time work & his friends that didn't go to university have got cafe or shop jobs but only 20 hours a week. Good luck & keep trying but our younger generation have not got it easy.

Scentedcandles99 · 14/11/2025 22:12

Exactly the same as my 18 year old son! Applied for countless apprenticeships, no interviews and no responses at all. Also applied for Christmas jobs in Sainsburys, Tesco, Asda, smyhts, m and s and only had two interviews for these with no responses after. I find it very unprofessional that these well known organisations can’t even let people know that have made the effort to attend an interview that they have been unsuccessful.

ByRealLemonFox · 14/11/2025 22:12

My DS is 17 and trying to get a P/T job. He is having no luck despite having an amazing CV for a17 year old. He has done extra courses and is 1st aid trained along with a level 2 fitness instructor and FA coach and referee. He is applying to every possible job but getting no responses. He is at the stage where he is thinking of starting up 1-2-1 football coaching to get some money to put himself through uni.

To be honest weeks isn't really that long, why hasn't she signed on wirh any agencies yet? That was the first thing i did when i left school which got me placed into lots of different companies and eventually landed a perm j9b with them

RockyRogue1001 · 15/11/2025 00:09

My DD is a bit older, just finished her masters

She has got a job, and it's something she wants to do, but most of her peers are doing bar work or waiting tables. These are people with 2 degrees in one of the country's biggest cities

I think you need to go quirky.
And be applying for jobs that other people don't want to do.

But it is tough out there.
Dd applied for dozens of jobs, and was ghosted by 99% of the ones she applied for

rasnnz · 15/11/2025 00:12

I know a teen who does Amazon delivery driving. My dc said it’s £19ph with own car. Not sure if that’s correct.

Ireallywantadoughnut36 · 15/11/2025 07:44

I suspect that cost of living is pushing people who normally wouldn't go for starter jobs into them as side work (evening pub shifts, weekend delivery driving, evening supermarket shifts etc) plus there's ai, factories etc no longer really needing people. It's hard when you're starting out. Keep her spirits high, see what additional qualifications she can get either through college or online to bulk her CV out and improve her employability. I left uni during the years when jobs were fine and still applied for literally hundreds before I got one and it took 4 months (i even had temp agency office work from my holidays, cafe work from when I was a teenager plus my degree and great A levels)- sign up with agencies, get temp work, apply for everything as once you've got a years work on the CV it might mean she can begin applying for things she really wants. Keep her spirits up, she'll get there

Viviennemary · 15/11/2025 08:57

Id say that maybe she should consider some sort of course for vocational training. If she has little experience of the work place and lacks any kind of training this will be holding her back in thd job market.

Screwyousimon · 15/11/2025 09:19

DS is at Uni in Bristol, he has 3 years of hospitality experience including kitchen, front of house, bar work and expo and he cannot find a job. He has applied to everything there is to apply for on Indeed and just keeps getting rejection emails. Even the temp Xmas jobs he is having no luck with. He is a lovely lad and really good at his job but given I read all the time there are plenty of jobs it is not matching his experience.

Itsnotallaboutyoulikeyouthink · 15/11/2025 09:23

My son is 16 doing a t level
and can’t even get the work experience that’s need for the course for him to pass. Only one company that we have contacted have replied with a thanks but no thanks. It’s ridiculously tough out there for the young ones.
