Mobile phone abroad usage re the data

Can someone explain in plain language using my phone abroad.
Do I turn the WiFi off and it then uses data from my house internet.
Or keep it turned on and use the phone data.
I do have 125gb data. Unlimited calls and texts.
I won't be calling anyone unless it was an emergency.
No texting I'll just use messenger or WhatsApp.
Might use Google.
Or do I need to do something else.

Which country are you going to?

KnickerlessParsons · 12/11/2025 20:57

Using WiFi to access internet/make calls won’t cost you anything.
making phone calls will cost whatever your provider charges - check with them.
connecting to the internet without using WiFi will also cost whatever your provider charges.

You’ll need to make sure your provider has roaming switched on for you to make calls/connect to Internet without using WiFi.

You need to check the roaming charges for your phone network. You may have to buy a package to cover you for using your phone abroad. It depends on your provider and where you are going

APatternGrammar · 12/11/2025 20:58

Your network provider should have a page you can reference for the country you are going to. Some will have free roaming, others you will need to take a lot of care, but there isn’t a general answer. You can also get a second eSim for the other country if the rates are too high.

Most mobile phone packages give you free roaming in Europe so no different from using it at home. Check with your provider

Wonderknicks · 12/11/2025 21:00

Which provider? With mine (iD mobile) you could use it just as if you were at home. Others (eg O2) you have to pay per day to use your regular package. Or you can get an eSIM if you can't use the data you already gave.
Leave wifi on & use that where you can.
(Sorry, others typed faster than me!)

We're with EE and they dont offer free roaming in the EU. We pay extra for a pass for the holiday so we can use our UK allowances while away

BTsrule · 12/11/2025 21:03

you can just carry on using your phone normally if going to an eu country. Most providers charge a daily roaming fee
to do this which will be automatically applied. You might also be able to buy a weekly or monthly roaming contract. Check how much your provider charges.

If you are away for more than a few days and /or going to a non eu country it is worth buying an e sim which will give you a fixed amount of data for a fixed period. Then you can use what’sapp to make calls and send messages and also access the internet.

Bpod1 · 12/11/2025 21:03

If you really want data allowance at a potentially lower cost abroad, have a look at e-sims if your phone is fairly modern

Not sure this is correct any more

lljkk · 12/11/2025 21:04

I get esimms which... dont' always work. Is great when it does work...
Also with EE.

lljkk · 12/11/2025 21:05

ps: in Spain June this year, I just go a local physical simm for £10 or maybe it was 10 euros. From vodafone, which store I found by using a hotel free Wifi. Super cheap huge data package. Worked out well.

We have had free roaming across Europe

It depends on your package whether you have eu roaming included or not so firstly check that.
If you do, just use your phone exactly as you do in the UK. When you land you will get a text clarifying your charges for calls for instance.

Bjorkdidit · 12/11/2025 21:13

I've also had free roaming in Europe in the last couple of years so post Brexit with Giff Gaff, Lebara and iD mobile, I've switched around a lot because I've been trying to find the best network for rural areas in the UK and I also need it to work for free in the Isle of Man, which is quite a restrictive requirement.

I don’t think she says who she is with?
Before Brexit it was the norm after Brexit a lot of them stopped. I know when we changed contracts I specifically chose O2 and Lebara for that reason as I didn’t want to pay extra.
also she needs to check the acceptable use policy as just because she has a certain allowance in UK not all providers allow the full package to be used abroad. Eg I have 100gb of data but can only get 25gb free per month in EU.

LIZS · 13/11/2025 11:24

You need to turn off mobile data service. O2 give free roaming in EU, other networks you may need to buy a bolt on package. Otherwise only use local wifi where available.
