my 16 year old started college in september was fine at first but rhe last few weeks has been extremely tired , lost weight not sure if its related or not but it has been a quick loss - she went fr size 14 trousers to size 10 in around 4-6 weeks. She has been just lying down when she gets home , too tired to go to clubs she normally goes to. She struggled to walk around shops even and that was on a saturday so no college. She sleeps well.

i took her to the gp a few days ago
and he made me feel like i was over reacting and kept asking her things like “do you have an eating disorder” . She has had a folic acid deficiency in the past and i really had to push for just a test for that an anemia. she has the blood test next week. She recently had a 5 day heart monitor on after fainting iver a year ago ( it took that long to get it) but tbh she has no symptoms of anything like that.

She is only at college three days a week today is her second day this week and she looks awful. Shes just lying on her bed and has been since 5 when she got home. She was not feeling strong enough to go to an group she normally loves tonight.

I am really concerned about her and ive told her i think she should really take tomorrow off (shes not in friday anyway) and rest. She has the blood test next wednesday.

am i just over reacting here to normal teenage things because the gp made me feel like a crazy old woman!

Well I could get a blood test today if I wanted one and I’m not even sick. People live in places that this is possible!

But could you get it done quicker than today?

HorrorFan81 · 13/11/2025 11:27

Another vote for glandular fever - i got it just before 2nd year of uni and was beyond exhausted for months. Eventually got through it but health was never quite the same after and many years later I developed ME/CFS. You should still push for all the possible blood tests but if nothing found i would treat like post viral fatigue and prioritise rest. Look into pacing for energy management

@Pickledpoppetpicklei have a family member that is type 1 and 2 that are type 2.
Never have the Type 2 diabetics compared their condition to Type 1.
They are very aware of the differences, they know that their grandchild has a non working pancreas, absolutely nothing like their condition and how they manage it.
The pp clearly stated that the type 1 was giving information that was shit, their own words. They have a totally different condition so should not be criticising advice given by someone who actually has the condition being discussed.
Maybe if others were aware of the differences my DC wouldn’t have been asked if they got type 1 because they ate too many sweets, they wouldn’t be told oh my granny had that and reversed it, oh and you don’t look diabetic as your too skinny.
Comparing the 2 causes so many problems to type 1 diabetics.
One is an autoimmune condition and one isn’t.

Fully agree, they are very different conditions and cause so many issues for those with Type 1 diabetes.

You have got a totally different condition to a type 1 diabetic so should not be comparing the 2 and you certainly shouldn’t be criticising information given by a type 1 diabetic as being incorrect.
You have the luxury of not have a life threatening life long autoimmune disease, type 1 don’t so I’d maybe keep your advice to type 2 diabetic questions

Oh Im sorry, I wasn't aware you had my medical history in front of you.

The OP's daughter isn't currently DX with any type of diabetes at all - so being told not to worry until BG is at 15+ is bonkers. Regardless of what type of diabetes anyone has, or might have.

I do have a lifelong autoimmune condition (it's just not Type 1 Diabetes, Diabetes Nurse suspects Type 1.5/ latent autoimmune but I am currently house bound and unable to attend the necessary appointments to take that suspicion further). I am insulin dependent, wear a CGM and am on a basal/bolus insulin regime.

Can you go to a pharmacy and ask for the urine strips

If you have diabetes then your normal I have always found is slightly higher than the average non diabetic

The urine strips will tell if there is any sugar in her urine which obviously shouldn’t be there.

Can I ask if she has had any injury in the last couple of months where she has had skin cut or scraped off.
A few people I know have developed diabetes after having an injury.

GirlFromMars1 · 13/11/2025 12:09

I'd ask to see a different GP. Any unintentional weight loss (especially such an extreme amount in a short period) and the fatigue are red flag symptoms that cannot be ignored. Cancer in young people is rare but not impossible so they need to investigate properly. She should complete a FIT test too to help exclude bowel cancer.

Balloonhearts · 13/11/2025 12:33

That amount of weight loss coupled with exhaustion is something. Don't be fobbed off, that isn't normal. I'd lay my bet on diabetes but could be something more sinister and needs investigating. Go privately if you can afford it, it'll be faster.

nosleepforme · 13/11/2025 12:34

You know your kid better than a rushed gp

mamakoukla · 13/11/2025 12:39

You are doing the right thing by advocating for your daughter’s health. It is hard when you don’t feel heard but please, keep strong. They are very concerning symptoms, indicative of a number of possible conditions. It may take a few goes but keep knocking at doors. She is very lucky to have you keeping an eye out for her. I hope you both get to the bottom of this soon. Make some time for yourself to catch your breath and look after yourself well; it is a stressful situation to be in.

Alliod40 · 13/11/2025 12:41

My god the comments on here about Diabetes are terrible..alot of you people need to be properly educated quickly..Type 1's don't get highs unless they're not taking their insulin properly unlike what some of these imbeciles are saying..yes we do correct if we do even if we don't have pumps..I use a pen..oh imagine that 😉..please stop giving incorrect information..just say nothing when you dong know the proper information before you kill someone ffs

You got yo stop telling her to take the day off ,you should be saying college is good for you and when you get stuck into the course you will relax more and at the same time she could meet new friend's ,encouraging is good and if she needs a little help good and listen to her.

Have you actually read any part of this thread or anything the OP has written? 🤦‍♀️

Artsyjojo · 13/11/2025 13:02

Also any possibility of sudden overactive thyroid maybe. Hopefully in the bloods they ordered they covered this too. My thyroid condition came on suddenly. It lead to alot of side effects for me including weight loss and tiredness and some vitamin deficiency. I also work in colorectal at a hospital in non medical role and agree a fit test is a good call especially if having bowel changes too or abdo pain discomfort. Doctors really overlook cancer in young people especially woman and just put it down to periods etc.

AlwaysALargeSauvignonBlanc · 13/11/2025 13:06

I hope you have a more successful appointment today OP. My daughter (17) has recently been diagnosed with moderate / severe anaemia.

I didn't realise how bad she was and we actually joked calling her the nap queen for months and months because she could fall asleep at the drop of a hat. I took her to the GP about her horrendous periods and the blood tests came back with significant vitamin D deficiency and iron. She is on lots of tablets now but is feeling so much better. The GP said she would've been feeling quite shitty - I felt terrible !
I hope it's something a simple as this for your DD.
Good luck getting answers

NatalieW1907 · 13/11/2025 13:07

No not over reacting at all ex nurse keep pushing the doctors, poor girl couid be anemic or whatever but needs looking at no life for her. Good luck

mleggs11 · 13/11/2025 13:13

Glandular fever possibly? Spreading through my son’s college friends at the moment, excessive tiredness key symptom. Hopefully you will get some answers today.

Praying4Peace · 13/11/2025 13:14

aufolandedonmyface · 12/11/2025 20:30

Can i do that if he ordered the blood tests? Should i wait for those - i think he said it was to check for anemia and folic acid .

If your daughter is anaemic, that will account for her symptoms.
I had similar symptoms a long time ago and was diagnosed with iron deficiency anaemia. Blood count was very low. Symptoms resolved after treatment

Nanatobethatsme46 · 13/11/2025 13:15

I would call 111 explain that youve already seen a gp but are not happy hes taking it seriously and you are very worried that somethings very wrong
They should give you a slot at your nearest walk in centre to be seen by a dr
Ours is now attached to our local a&e so any issues they get sent there
Please call and get seen by someone else, no mother ever regretted doing to much but plenty have regretted not getting a second opinion when something doesnt feel right
You know your child and shes not right

That’s completely untrue, especially for children that can’t correct until they’re over 14 due to their ratios. The pens only allow doses in increments of 0.5 units. It’s also not just food that makes blood glucose levels rise, this particular relevant to children as there are so many variables. It’s nice to hear that you are able to manage your diabetes very well and have ratios that allow you to give corrections before you reach 15. However it’s not the reality for a lot of people that have type 1 diabetes.

BreatheAndFocus · 13/11/2025 13:17

Type 1 diabetes, coeliac disease and some thyroid problems are all auto-immune. As your mum had Type 1, all these need ruling out, with Type 1 as the priority because DKA can develop very quickly.

I have Type 1. I lost a lot of weight pre-diagnosis and the idiot nurse told me it must be because I wasn’t eating enough, even though I told her the large amounts I was eating. I was eating lots because I had zero energy and could barely pull myself upstairs. I was also drinking and weeing lots. I was feeling tired and a bit off but then suddenly one evening I just didn’t feel right. The emergency doctor diagnosed me with Type 1 and said I was in the early stages of DKA. It was scary how fast things changed.

I hope you get answers soon.

Tiffanycat · 13/11/2025 13:21

She's 16 and college is a whole different thing . Maybe she's not eating so well when your not there intentionally as peer pressure to look a certain way . Bloods would be best route as my 16 year old is in full time college and works 28hours a week sometimes( I think it's alot but she's happy to do it for money) but she never sleeps in and never seems exhausted ,tired maybe yes but she does it all without struggle. Is she vaping also maybe that suppresses appetite. Would she take diet pills or drugs ? I think sometimes we blindly trust our kids when it could be something else

Mumofoneandone · 13/11/2025 13:35

Glad you've got an appointment with another GP.
You know your DD, the medics don't, just keep going back and pushing for tests etc until you get an answer. Don't let them fob you off. You are advocating for your DD and her symptoms do sound worrying when compared with how she was
I had to keep going back to the GP before finally being referred and diagnosed with CFS ME.

Astrabees · 13/11/2025 13:43

Please try another doctor. Our previous GP ordered blood test on my son, asking him to agree so that I would stop bothering them with my "needless anxiety" turned out he had a pituitary tumour and his sight would have been at risk if he had not had immediate treatment.

TiredmumandNanny · 13/11/2025 14:15

Please get her blood sugars checked, similar symptoms to type 1 diabetes which is very dangerous if left untreated, tiredness, weightloss, although normally extra thirsty and passing water a lot, especially at night
